Just saw this a few hours ago at a great gunstore in Connecticut...an AR upper with side charging handle made by American Spririt Arms out of Arizona..it looked and felt to be very high quality...it was very interesting to see an upper without the chaging handle at the rear-end...

(note, this is a pre-ban lower so it is allowed all the accessories)

I've had one for about 7yrs now, I don't shoot it often as I have trained with the traditional AR so much my muscle memory dowsn't allow instinctive action with the ASA, but the "side cocker" is nice, and can be more effective than a charging handle AR. After a few thousand rounds the pin holding the cocking handle will work loose though, you have to keep an eye on it.

Dang, wish I hadn't gone into this thread.

I sure do miss visiting gun shops in New England. The gun shows in the Connecticut river valley kicked a$$.

Those pictures bring back lots of good memories. No trigger lock, cable tied b@llsh!t, just pick up and look at whatever you want.

And nobody ever robs a gun shop down there - unless they want to die violently.

Thanks for the pix.

Thanks for the pics Robert.

I love the gun shop/ jewelry shop combination...both "His & Hers", wish list items. ;)

The Clinton AW ban expired in 2004, you can actually add all the evil features you want within your state limts and 922r foreign parts count rules now...

RL1 most likely added that warning because Connecticut has it's own state AW ban.

We forget sometimes that the US is a collection of 50 individual sets of laws. On the federal level, only civil rights, interstate commerce, and currency laws apply to the states.

I had a chance to run Reapers side cocker I really like it,I think it would be a ideal upper for a SPR ish gun and a BAD lever and done

Dlask only ever had the one upper that Reaper has now. Tom Felcan brought it in for him and we built the Kitty Kat on it. I wanted to build a DMR on it but Joe was all gung ho for the shorty. Still my favorite upper though.

The Dlask DAP-601 was also side cocking. What ever happened to that model? It seemed like a good idea.

I could be wrong, but I believe those uppers were actually built by another custom AR builder, Ernie Wrenn, who has since run afoul of the law.

If I remember right the ASA upper was assembled with a few different profiles for pictures, but only ever had the one upper.

In a DMR platform the side cocker would rule, much easier to manipulate the bolt in the prone, there are some issues such as the cut down bolt release, locking the action to the rear is a bit of a juggle, the cocking handle is a copy of the FN folding handle but not as robust, mine has begun to wear to the point I may have to stake/pin the retaining pin in it. If I would have had this 25 yrs ago when the FN was still in service doubt I would have bothered with a conventional AR set up, this side cocker has pretty much the same manual of arms as the FN.
