Four semi-automatic assault rifles were reported stolen on Wednesday morning during a break and enter at a gun repair shop in St. John's.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said someone broke into Complete Gun Repair on O'Leary Avenue, near the Avalon Mall, between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Items stolen from the business include four military-style semi-automatic assault rifles.

Their type and serial numbers are:

Colt serial number: MH017628
Colt serial number: ST015155
Stag Arms 3R serial number: 268076
Bravo Company serial number: W05785
There was no ammunition stolen from the business.

The RNC is concerned about the type of items stolen and considers their potential availability on the street to be a public safety concern.

military-style semi-automatic assault rifles you say? I knew AR always stood for assault rifle
I bet they were cool looking ARs though, no Norinco for those thieves. Hopefully they turn up.

The CBC web site includes a button "Report Typo". Here's the text of what I sent in using this button which takes you to an online form to report a typo or inaccuracy.

"Your reporter incorrectly refers to AR-15 type sporting rifles as Assault Rifles. Assault Rifles by definition must be capable of fully automatic fire whereas AR-15s are only capable of firing semiautomatically - one round per trigger press. I suggest your report learn more about firearms before reporting on them."

Feel free to force feed the CBC the truth using their own resources.

Really guys?

I have a Classic Green and love my guns but lets call a spade a spade. 95% of the general public have no idea how our guns laws work, let alone how the trigger / lower on an AR-whatever differs from a C8/M16. I'm sure that almost every person in this country has seen a movie in which a soldier / bad guy / hero etc. use an M16 to spay bullets all over the place in a shoot-out = assault rifle. As a result, when those same people see a rifle that looks identical (except for one more option on the selector switch) they will call you semi automatic, limited to 5 rounds AR-15 an assault rifle.

And don't get me started on all this hate for the liberal media ... If we want guns to be more accepted in Canada or do anything such as un-restrict ARs you're going to need the media on board.
