At the range, issues with the 10/22

I just bought it a few weeks ago and really like it alot. Made it out again today and my 6 year old son got to try it out,.. he is a pro already so he tells me:D Using Winchester plated ammo and some American Eagle lead ammo and had a bunch of misfires with the Win. ammo, half a dozen jams, and some jams with the A.E ammo as well. Most of the issues were when using the Butler Creek mags, but I also found one of my factory mags not working properly too. It seemed like it isn't pushing up enough to properly position the next round to be chambered. Do you suppose its all magazine related, but to go on further a couple of the jams were with a spent case caught up in the chamber. Are the 10/22's known to have extraction and ejection problems? Should I stop buying the cheap Walmart ammo? Appreciate any and all input.
 
I have never had any trouble with the mag, so i don't know about that. I would just check to make sure they are clean and nothing is caught. If you don't clean them for a while (especially after cheap rounds) stuff accumulates where the bullet leaves the mag.

I have had the casings get caught when using the cheap wal mart ammo.

In using the cheap win ammo there are occasional misfires but that is just the cheap ammo. Never any issues with decent quality stuff.


I still use the cheap stuff for plinking and live with the odd jam/misfire
 
Get yourself a a exact edge extractor by Volquartsen and it should fix the FTE problem.It was the best $13.00 mod i did for my gun:)
 
Half of the 10-22 stock gun will have feeding or eject problem with standard velocity ammo. The gun need good clean and lub before the first range section and better use 40gr high velocity ammo. Good thing of 10-22 is if everything doesn't work out, then you can go for after market parts which are developed for the defected design of 10-22.

I was reading last night on a forum that talked about cleaning out the factory packing grease/preservative which I haven't done. I guess it gums up the action pretty easy. One fellow reccommended a dry lube rather than an oil for the action. I don't have access to a local gun supply store, but would silicone lube, or graphite work? I had thought about the extractor swap, which I intend to do along with a hammer and trigger change. Another fellow posted about polishing the guiderod as well. Going back out today, I will see what I can get for a dry lube and clean the gun thoroughly and try it out. I have a few boxes of Sellior Bellot match ammo to try and see if I can sort things out. Thanks for the input!
 
Both of my sons experience FTF's all the time yet when I run their gun it functions fine. They'll fire a shot and then *click*....nothing in the chamber. Every once in awhile it'll stovepipe while ejecting a round, but 95% of the time it's just a complete failure to feed. I think they are limp wristing it.

How does your gun behave while you're shooting it?
 
I use CCI exclusively in my 10/22.
After over 5000 rounds through my Target model 10/22 not a single jam with CCI.
Tried some AE hollow points one time and after ever 5-7 rounds I would have a jam.
 
I'd recomend a good cleaning/lubing first. For $13 an extractor is a good investment as well. Ive got an aftermarket extractor and I can run cheap walmart bulk ammo through a butler creek 25 round mag (the type a lot of people whine about not working) and I can run cheap walmart bulk ammo with few problems. I clean and lube it after EVERY use.
 
Thanks for all the input! I just got home and put alot thru it today. I picked up a can of dry lubricant to try, I field stripped, used degreaser on everything and wiped it down and tried this lube I bought. I would have to say 250-300 rounds before any issues. I also tried some Federal High Vel. plated ammo and had pretty good luck with it. I am on the second brick of ammo now, so hopefully a break-in period will help. I haven't seen any CCI ammo anywhere around here yet, or I would grab some to try. Is there anyone using any Remington brand ammo? I likely am going to get the extractor when I order the hammer/sear kit. Thanks again guys, I appreciate the insight!

Good advice here! I second what pc9 said.

Now, my 10/22 has had 2 fail to fire events in roughly 500 rounds down range... Both rounds fired the second time the firing pin struck them... This is with the 550 round bulk pack Federal 36 grain hollow point rounds... I assume it is an issue with the primer compound in the rim of the round.

With the edge extractor, I've never had a fail to eject...

Same thing happens with my daughter. I can blast through hundreds flawlessly but it seems she can't go through a mag without problems. I've yet to figure out what she is doing differently. :confused:
