I don't know if anyone has been paying attention to what's happening south of the border right now, but Americans are in full fledged panic mode (happens once a week it seems) that ammo supplies are drying up and they are buying everything they can that's in sight.

I've heard of people lined up at Wal*Mart to buy the handgun ammo that comes in. I've heard of .223 going for more then a buck a round because demand is so high for it.

At what point in time does the hording in the US start to affect the supply we get here? Or does it? I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

I think the hoarding is already affecting us up here. I've talked to a couple of people that run reloading supply businesses. They have stated that there are shortages of everything right now. Dribs and Drabs come down the line, but nowhere the same as it used to.

It already is, US manufacturers are obviously going to feed the domestic market first. Getting hard to get primers up here, certain powders, some manufacturers bullets.

That being said, I was in Cabelas in Lacey WA a few weeks ago and it was pretty well stocked, hand guns - lots, factory ammo was a bit picked over in certain calibers but still had some there, brass was pretty picked over, almost no primers, powder unsure as they don't leave it on the shelf.

I've been hoarding for about 15 years now in fear of a Democratic President and control of Congress.

The stuff never gets cheaper, so why not buy all you can when you do see it?

I am astonished by the price of certain components lately, it seem like just a couple years ago primers at $30 per 1000 was a rediculous price.

If your reloading, stock what you need in excess, bullets don't go bad, primers and powder will last a lifetime if stored cool and dry.

Brass, well we all know how much we can reuse brass. Its cheap when bought in bulk once fired. It won't go bad.

So, when you know you are going to use brand X bullets and brand Y powder etc, buy it when you see it. Its getting hard to find a lot of stuff these days, but its still out there if you look hard enough.

I am concerned at the future of our favorite passtime.....reloading. Although well stocked in most of the things I use on a regular basis, the price and difficulty finding things might turn off alot of people. I hope for everyone that things get better, but until then, I will be an anxious hoarder!

Some of the gunstores in the US that I have seen have been well stocked in certain things, other things are tough or way overpriced. Still, the American's have it way better than we do. I always walk out of US gunstores now shaking my head in all the bargins I could have had, if only we could buy stuff and export things like the old days!

Still, some things here are at great prices, my hats off to the shops that keep their prices in line.....I always enjoy some of our local gunshops because when they do have things in stock I want, the prices are usually okay or within reason.

We were just sent a copy of a communication that a wholesaler received from Chris Hodgdon on an update for a shipment of smokeless powder. One of the sentences is as follows "No words in the dictionary that describes what is going on, chaotic panic buying everywhere with no end in sight. Considering the economy the way it is right now I'm thankful to have a job period". Phil.

Just came back from Twin Falls Idaho, Sportsmans Wharehouse usually have scads of stuff but all that was available for bullets was .303 and 6.5,, three cans of unusual powder! Red's had a sign out front ".223 now back in stock" about $11/box, and only about 10 cases.. They said Sierra and Hornady were working 24/7 and could not keep up.

Its definitely affected us here already.Ive been trying to get hold of Tightgroup and small pistol primers for some time now, without luck,Ive been told by the supplier that when the shipment arrives the price will be up about 40% from when I last bought primers about 6 months ago,end who knows when the shipment will actually arrive?

Ive got quite a good supply for the moment,so Im happy to sit back and let this panic in the states die down.I hope that all the hoarding, when it finally dies down (which Im sure it will eventually will),will see prices slowly come down again, but this may be wishful thinking and we may just be stuck with these new prices. In the meantime,I will be shooting my 22s more and much less with the centerfires.

Its a pretty strange situation in the US at the moment judging from the US forums, theres going to be a lot of ammo and components in peoples basements, buried underground etc!

When OBAMA gets done there will be zero guns or related compoments heading north. The damned Homeland Defence zealots will seize anything they deam a threat at any border .You can't take ammo or such out of the Sates even though Canada is ok with it.You risk jail, vehical confiscation and no future entry to the US.I have no reason to go to Montana ever again as we went every two years or so and stocked up on reloading supplies. We had better look to Europe or start making our own. This falls right into the UN wanting total disarmament of civillians in member countries........Harold

it has already started effecting us. call lee and ask for delivery times, its 6-8+ months to get almost anything. primers are getting harder to find.

heard some of the guys at epps saying people down in the states are calling them to try and get ammo as they cant find any down there.

It is hurting us here already. The US Military has contracts with civilian plants to make ammo. Afghanistan and Iraq are chewing through ammo like crazed squirrels on a jar of peanut butter.

The lastest video I've seen shows Lake City Arsenal does not store it's made ammo. It goes straight to the troops in theatre. Same as gun manufactures. Smith and Wesson said we sell guns..and we don't have any. Sold before they are made.

I bet GM and Chrysler would love to be in the ammo business right now !!

If a dealer has it in Canada and you can afford it buy it now. As for powder buy big and to keep ERD happy store some with a family member that shoots or shooting buddy. Same for primers brass and bullets.

Yep there it's even now impossible to get .22 in some parts of the country...

And YES Obama is against guns. People know that, that's why they are hellbent on arming themselves. Obama wants to take their guns? It won't be easy, it will turn into a civilians VS police/military war.

Anyway, why don't we open ammo factories in Canada? We would make a killing in $$$$. There's obviously not enough production... stop the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and we would have enough ammo...

I want cheap 9mm, 5.56 and 7.62! Below 10cents/bullet!

Crappy Tire @ Marine had No .308 and only 2 500 round boxes of .22 yesterday. The shot gun value packs were almost gone too. If you are not stocking up, you may be SOL in a very short time. The supply has been dwindling at several of the stores I've been to lately. That includes my reloading guy.

I contemplated this (if I ever won the lotto), but the problem lies in the fact that when the war is "done", that "cheap ammo" that you want is made at a huge loss to the manufacturers.

All things go in cycles.

I remember panic buying and inflated prices ten years ago during the reign of Clinton.

I also remember surplus 5.56 and 7.62x39mm being sold dirt cheap in the States after the first Gulf War ended, and for some time after.

When the war in the Middle East is over, I think there will be a glut of cheap milsurp ammo available again. 9x19mm, 5.56mm, 7.62x39mm, and 7.62x51mm will be everywhere.

Don't forget.... It is NOT a war with Iraq or a war with Afghanistan, it is a War on Terror! (insert maniacal laugh).

It is called that for a reason....it can go on forever. No need to actually identify an enemy or justify actions. A free ticket to go where you want and more importantly spend what you want to fight this 'enemy'.

rant over :)... So yup....there will be No "END".

This is one of the only realistic posts in this thread. All the rest of the "buy now at whatever the cost" posts are the reason for the panic in the first place.
