I'm in the market for a new scope at around $1,000 for PRS style shooting. The Athlon Ares Gen2 4.5-27x50 and the Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56 look good. Any opinions/thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Depends if you are shooting centerfire or rimfire I guess but, Pretty sure the Midas tac is the Athlon scope that you are looking for as it has the same specs as the Strike Eagle.. 32MIL internal travel etc.. (the Ares version you are comparing has 24MIL)

Good call. I looked at the 6-24x50 version of the Midas Tac and didn't realize that the 5-25x56 version had the larger elevation adjustment.

Yeah the Midas Tac 5-25 and the Strike Eagle 5-25 are 95% the same scope, probably made in same factory. But Midas Tac has advantages over the Strike Eagle, namely a vastly better zero stop system and a way to tell which turn of the elevation dial you are on. I haven't looked through them side by side at a range to know if the glass is same or different.

I think athlon put in alot of features for $1400 ,personally I could of given up the illumination and even the zero stop(I do like the feature but find I don't use it all that regularly)for better optical quality.i find after an hour behind the glass and I'm drained in the old eyes.i was shooting 223 and 22lr on Monday with all 3 scopes.the mirage at 200 was not bad but wasn't great and found my self using the match pro or the gen 2 pst vortex to see the 22lr hits at 200 yards.i could see them faintly in the beginning with the ares but after a few hrs it strained my eyes were the match pro or vortex didn't.but the match pro has no lume or zero stop but is also a $780.00 scope.i used the strike eagle for an afternoon and it was not the quality of the gen 2 pst it was equally as good as the ares, maybe?the athlon looks darker.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you say again the model and magnification of the Athlon you have?
