Whatever you do, dont grind the top of the gas tube at the back. I have one that was ground down by a so called gunsmith to make it fit "better". I had the gas tube fly off the gun and land a good 70' behind me one time. I am looking for a non butchered gas tube too replace it with. My stock sks takes a good smack to get the gas tube in place too.

1. take SKS out of ATI stock
2. get wood stock from where ever you left it
3. put SKS back in wood stock
4. feel better about yourself immediately
5. return ATI stock
6. roll in money

Good evening,

I'm trying to install an ati strikeforce into my 54 Russian sks. I'm having troubles re installing the gas tube. It doesn't seem to go down far enough to let the lever lock back into place. Any thoughts on where to grind to get that gas tube back on? Thx

You need to get a file or sander or dremel and shave a bit of the plastic off the bottom side of the hand guard. When you are trying to push down the lever it is pushing the gas tube up and not letting it seat down far enough. Try putting it on, see where it's touching the stock, shave a bit and keep doing that untill you can get it on normally

NEED PICS.

I fitted a tapco gas cylinder to my SKS.

what people don't realize is that the SKS is like the SMLE, there are variations in fits, it is not a plug and play lego gun.

If the clip that secures the (TAPCO) gas cylinder does not secure you have to open your eyes at the area where the cross pin is camming into. A very small amount of steel needs to be removed to allow the pin to cam into the locked position.

I would not grind on the original gas cylinder.

EDIT: I WOULD GET A TAPCO GAS CYLINDER AND SEE IF THAT FITS BETTER. THE FIRST MODIFICATION OF THE TAPCO GAS CYLINDER WOULD BE TO GRIND OFF THE HOKEY PLASTIC 'RAIL' ON TOP. :p

Hope you can see this message through all the sarcasm in this thread. Could be:

1 - The handguard ferrule (retaining) pins are protruding too much. Lightly file them down so they are flush with the ferrule.

2 - The ferrule itself has expanded from the new upper handguard. File it down lightly until it fits.

Damn....that's a nice stock. AND you get to keep the bayonet. I may have to get one of these. How well is pistol grip secured to the stock? I have an ATI one and one single screw holds the pistol grip in place. I find it gets loose pretty quick.
