My budget is a maximum of $1000.

I’m new-ish to shooting. Im on the list for a ATRS MS. The build will be in .223

Looking to spend much of my time behind this rifle between 100-300yards. Is there a reason to steer clear of higher magnifications, like 6x? Is there such a thing as “too much”. I like the idea of being able to get “right up in that target”. Seems like most reviews suggest a 4x for these distance. But the closer the optic gets me to the target the better (again, unless I’m missing something?).

I’ve looked at the

- Burris RT6
- Vortex Viper PST Gen II
- And a handful of others... but I’m becoming more and more confused. The last brand I started to look at was Trijicon, but realized they’re out of my budget...

I want lots of eye relief (I’ve used scopes that are almost unusable). And it would be great if there was a illumination (red dot-ish) reticle.

Any input or suggestions is appreciated.

Looking for the “best bang for the buck”. If that means spending $1000 then so be it.

Not the Vortex!!!!! Previous Vortex fanboy, the pats gen 2 has a horrible eye box, eye relief and if the sun is behind you a weird green relfection. Heard good things about the Sig line, been trying to find one to physacly look through.

Try looking at Trijicon Accupoint 1-4 and 1-6. I’ve personally used both of them and find they are a great ar optic.

It’s always better to have more magnification and not need it than the other way around.

I have a Vortex PST Gen 11 coming for mine. I have had Trijicon scopes in the past but found their reticle to be big and obtrusive with no defined point of aim.
Leupold makes a few decent offerings as well that may be worth looking at.

Question - is a 1-4 magnification strong enough for shooting from 100-300 yards? I have found a Sig Sauer Tango4 1-4x24 that’s well within my budget on sale. Or will I wish I had a 1-6 or 1-8?

If mostly hunting or target shooting I'd go with something in the 3-15x range. Or even 3-9x if on a budget.

I can shoot sub-moa with a 3-9x Leupold on a .260 Rem. It's hard to do that with with low-magnification AR scopes that have fat reticles.

10x40 Bushnell Elite scope is a wicked "bang for your buck".

Ive got it a few on a couple rifles, and 1 will be making its way to the MS with a QD mount so I can interchange it between my calibers/uppers

This is what im putting on my ATRS once its on sale:

Nikon P-Tactical 3-9X40MM - MK1-MRAD

I use its much older brother the:

Nikon Black 6-24X50MM ILLUMINATED X-MRAD, the much cheaper p tactical doesn't have parallax or illumination but is stripped down version in a smaller lighter package. The x1000 also comes in 4-16X which is perfect for .223 at longer ranges.

That's a great option right there. Here's a good review on that Nikon. It's no lightweight for a 1" tube but not bad either.

It depends what you’re shooting at, some people shoot out to 300 with a red dot

Very true, I've had excellent results with red dots at long ranges. I watched a video about zeroing at 200 yards, because how they work inside of 200 yards aka 25yards it's off by a lot less than you would think. Making it a very effective zero for the bush. Or something like that - on YouTube. Well I went and tried it out, and my god it works both long and close range. Very under rated info I stumbled across, or at least I didn't know this.

Makes magnified red dots seem a lot more practical in my eyes, when before I saw them as more "pimp my Ride" sort of kit.

What do you guys think about the Burris AR Riflescope 4.5-14x42mm? Price is right. Magnification seems to be a good compromise for what I’m looking to accomplish 100-300 yards. It’s not illuminated, but otherwise seems perfect

If I was buying a Modern Hunter I would be topping it with a Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40 because: a) I have one in my safe, and b) it's fairly light and compact which works well with a heavy-ish platform.
