What's a normal wait time for a brake to be installed. I supplied ATRS with an LMT MWS barrel and SF brake in mid-January and still no word? The snow will be melting soon and I want to shoot.

EDIT: I have received a personal communication from Rick explaining the delay. I am satisfied with his response. I have in no way (See my further posts), complained about the quality of Rick's work. It is always of the highest quality.

MARCH 15, EDIT: I received my barrel and brake from ATRS. Rick did a good job.

I send Rick work because I want him to do it, and I like the guy, he runs a "top shelf" operation. Time is incidental to me.

It's the nature of craftsmen that the poor ones can always start your job today, the good ones can start it next week, and the great ones already have more work than they can keep up with. We, as customers, tend to make their lives more than a little difficult -- because we all want the great ones to do our work, but we want it done with the timelines of the good ones and the prices of the poor ones

I've had Rick do a small job for me several months back. Before sending the parts to him to work on, I asked how long it would take, and he gave me an estimate, and made it clear what the worst case would be time-wise. It was a small job, and it was done within the timeframe he estimated at the time I commissioned the work.

Could I have had it done faster by someone less busy? For sure. Could it have been done cheaper? Yes, there were cheaper alternatives. Was the quality worth the wait and the price? Absolutely. I found Rick to be nothing less than professional and quite helpful when the project timelines and technicalities were being discussed. And in the end, I was very pleased with the outcome. The trick to getting here is to be clear up front with what you're asking for and with what the shop is presently facing as a work queue. Just because you think your half hour job should be getting taken care of in a couple of weeks doesn't mean a bloody thing if the shop already has a few months of work lined up. What makes you think you're so special that you have a right to jump to the head of the line? My hat goes off to any craftsman in any line of work who is in such demand -- because it means he's great at what he does. But he's no different than you or I -- he only has so many working hours in a day.

Don't get me wrong -- I know very well myself how frustrating it can be to have someone take forever to complete something after setting very different expectations when they accepted the work. But I don't think that's the case here. As it turns out, I'm one of those guys who's been eating up Rick's time in the wee hours of the morning as we exchange emails over a build he's about to start for me. This has involved a lot more than order taking -- he challenged my design piece by piece, debated with me, and together we ended up agreeing on what in his own words will be "one HELL of a rifle build". We're both looking forward to this one. But here's the thing: I know not to expect to see it until August, and it could run a bit later than that depending on when the components arrive from the various manufacturers. Fine -- I know what to expect. I should have it by the end of the summer. And even if sh#t happens, I'll have it by Xmas no matter what. If I find that acceptable, and I do, then I get to pass "Go", pay a good deal more than $200, and know that I'm going to end up with a no-compromise dream rifle put together by a gifted and meticulous master craftsman.

This approach may not be for everyone. If you don't like his prices, or think he takes too long, I'm sure just down the street someone's brother's best friend just bought an old used lathe and hung a "gunsmith" sign over his door. I'm sure he'll be happy to take care of your job tomorrow morning and will have it done by lunchtime.

I walked into ATRS a few days ago, dropped my AR on his front counter and asked if he could do a job on it that day. In between all the other jobs he had to do that day, he did quick fix and sold me a few AR parts and didn't even charge me for the shop time!

If you want quality, customer service and unparalleled craftsmanship talk to Rick if you want an amateur to slap a muzzle break on the end of you rifle for $10 send it to me:p

I've been to ARTS many times and never have I seen Dustin or Rick sitting down, screwing around or dogging it. The place is overwhelmed with business so please have patience with those guys; they are running a very successful family business.

However, I will say that you can't fault a guy (or business) for being so good at what they do that there is a backlog of work. A decent gunsmith can be hard to come by.

Guys
We are trying to make up for some unexpected down time, the last 3 months have been trying here. I have new staff that is working out FABULOUSLY, but like anyone at a new job, it takes time to get up to speed.
With the holiday season, inventory, an audit and SHOT Show, all these things have added up to take their toll on my time. We ARE striving to make up some lost time HOWEVER I refuse to rush any job as then the quality of the work can suffer.

To any who wish to have their projects cancelled here, I am more than willing to pay the shipping costs to send it back to you if you opt to not wait any longer for us to get the work done.

To those who saw fit to advertise other gunsmiths in sub forum the I PAY FOR, I thought that was just rude, so deleted your posts.

Hi Rick,

Your uber sophisticated internet security system (telus) keeps bouncing back my emails. How long of a wait time would I be looking at to get that precision upper built? We had email a few weeks ago but I got distracted by work.

Thanks.

Check their web site they have a new email address:

Thanks.

We are in the process of running uppers this week, we just finished the lowers last week. Figure about a month until our uppers are ready by the time we get ano done, then if it is to be a barrelled upper, a couple weeks to make the barrel and assemble it.

As Westside points out we had to change our email/internet as Telus could not cope nor would they work with us to try and solve their communications problems. We now have our own dedicated server with TONS of bandwidth so no more "your mailbox is full" crap

Please direct any emails to info@albertatacticalrifle.com

oh the growing pains

Just sent two rifles to Rick today for a brake and a few triggers, he said 4-6 weeks. Yup. No problem there. This is why you must own quite a few firearms, so your not waiting for the one thats out being worked on:ar15:

Sent two out april 14th, brakes, trigger, bolt knob etc. Dustin called yesterday said they're sending them back complete already. YAA! Today's the 10th of May. I'd hardly call that a serious wait time myself. Thanks Rick!

I'm waiting for a complete upper from Dustin. I finally pulled the pin and ordered one last week. Should be done soon so the wait doesn't seem bad at all. Can't wait to go blast Pdogs with it down south.

We ARE getting our turnaround times down significantly. :D
Our new staff members are making a huge difference and the results are better products, shorter times and lower pricing on inhouse made parts. We are also expanding our line of inhouse made parts significantly.
I just wish that the parts we still need to import would get here faster, but that we have no control over.:HR:

C'mon Canada Post...my upper was shipped today so why isn't it at my door yet? :D

Range report to follow once I have it in my greasy little hands.
Thanks ATRS.

Thanks ATRS.

Well without trying too hard the upper is capable of 1 inch groups. I'm sure it's capable of sub moa performance. Hope to go back to range tomorrow and do some more shooting with better ammo. I am one happy customer. :)

I think one of the things that often happens with wait times is that there is a misunderstanding at the outset and many businesses try to earn business by stating an unrealistic timeline for work and so no effort has been made to manage customer expectations. I just commissioned a rifle build from ATRS and was told at the outset that it will be the end of the year or so before it is ready - for me that is fine, I have lots of things to shoot and if the new rifle arrives at Christmas I will consider it a present to myself but for others they may baulk at such a long wait and phone someone else who may 'promise' end of the summer in order to make the sale. Summer will end and no rifle will show which will generate a negative feeling. For me, I totally appreciated the upfront information that my rifle would take a long time and hope that Santa has his PAL so that he can deliver the new toy :)

Well said. ATRS is one of the few that won't feed you BS delivery times etc. Rick and crew are up-front about everything which is one of the several reasons I deal with them.

I am already two months past a promised delivery date for another job that someone else is doing for me (unfortnately it is not something ATRS does or they would have gotten that job too). The "other" guy answers my e-mails etc as long as they don't ask "when will I get it back?" Those e-mails / calls mysteriously never seem to make it to them.. or so that's the excuse :bangHead:

Regards,
