I have just purchased a new handgun in Toronto and would like to take it to Target Sports range that allows non members to come and shoot. Is it possible for me to get ATT for my trip from Toronto to Stoufville? I was explained that I must be a memebr of some club to get ATT but what if I haven't decided what club to become a member at and just want to try a new gun? Is there any way I can get my gun to the range without being a member?
Hope someone can help.
Thanks!

Sadly, no. You have to be a member of a CFO approved gun club with a valid ATT in order for you to take your firearm anywhere (to a CFO approved shooting range).
However, you can take a pistol training courses with your firearm at a CFO approved range without ATT only if you are send an invitation for the training.
Once you receive the invite you have to forward it to the CFO and they will issue you a temporary ATT for the time period of your training. ATT is issued within 15 min or less and they can fax or mail it to you.

I went through the same path and it all worked fine.

Let me know if you need help.

Wow, I thought there was a way... I did years of military service and literally fired thousands of rounds, never did I think I need to go through the pistol training course just to have a chance to go to a range to fire some...
If I understand correctly, I can be a member of any club and they'll issue ATT that I can use in all other gun clubs. Is that right?
Thanks again!

Unless you try this week, since the ON CFO has shut down the office for a conference.

I can't help but chuckle at the timing, since it was just one week ago that the ON CFO stated(lied?) in court, during a s74 hearing that ATT's are so easy to get that if you call at 8:00am you will have one by 8:05am and should not be seen as any sort of burden. Then they all take a week off.

Sadly, in Canada, there's no provision for either military or LEO qualifications to supercede the requirements set out by law. You could have your small instructors arms qualification, taught the Afghan army, cadets, and the reserves how to shoot but it doesn't mean squat.

To make things worse a lot of clubs require you to also conduct thier own in-house training and participate in a set amount of shooting events, and range practice, in order to be considered " a member in good standing." If you dont, they can call the CFO and have your ATT pulled.

Dont fret to hard though, stick with the program, hopefully you'll get the ATT with a club who'll do the paperwork quick and you'll be punching paper in no time. Good luck soldier...

I know there are clubs in BC that you can join to help you get your ATT. In fact, you'll get the paperwork the same day you join. You just have to fill it up and submit it.

As long as the club takes in non-members handgun shooters.
Not all clubs do, if any. You would have to go through the in-house safety training first. All clubs make you do it for Restricted.
Silverdale Gun Club is pretty easy on that (in no way I am advertising them) and they run the safety courses every Saturday. The price is $80.00.
I know they have a pistol training program but it's maxed out 99% of the time.
It sucks when you buy the toys and there are sitting in the safe.

Thanks a lot to all of you!
That's a real tough situation... Some idiots shoot innocent folks in public places and the government is tightening the screws for all legal licenses holders... and gun clubs dance along clipping coupons of those training course, practices, additional safety course and so on taking advantage of the system. Anyhow, hope at some point common sense will prevail.
Hey DougPeach, can I become a member in BC and get ATT for Ontario?

Legally it is easy to do, call the CFO and tell them when and where, and they email you a letter to print.
Functionally they aren't going to do it unless you call their boss and he calls them and asks why he's being bothered about it.

It's one of the nice bits of unfeasible policy they have. They say you don't need to be a member to get an LTATT, as they'll grant one if you have a history of STATTs, but then they refuse to issue STATTs without a club membership. Round and around, it's like we're being governed by a chatbot.

When I get around to applying for an ATT so I can go do the Black Badge course and all that fun stuff I fully expect them to say that they would issue it provided I had completed the BB course, which I need an ATT to complete. Around and around.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't shown up to confiscate the AR I'm not using right now and don't have an ATT for yet.

Join silvercore to get a member letter same day! Then shop around local clubs and ranges for the one you want, that's what I did.

Thanks a lot to all of you!

Hey Audio, I emailed Silvercore about this and they let me know that they are not affiliated with any clubs in Ontario or at least Toronto. I asked them if membership with them would be enough for an ATT in Toronto but that question wasn't answered. I assume since they said they have no affiliation in On a membership with them probably would't be enough.

Is there a Gun Club like Silvercore in Ontario that charges a similar fee ($30) that we can join to get an ATT? I'm just not sure which range I want to shoot at and most membership fees are fairly high ($300-$600).
