My dad is new to the ATT thing, he did have a pistol before the new rules came out.

So, when buying a handgun do you get it after you pay or do you need to go out and get a ATT before you can purchase one?

check out the stickey at the top of this forum :)

In Alberta and by what I know about BC its the same deal, when you do the transfer of your new handgun the CFO issues you a temp ATT to take it from where your buying it from to home, at the same time you can apply for your long term ATT (by fax) for all ranges in BC and other provinces (out west).

Its easy and all you have to do is ask the CFO if you have any other questions

I understand, I just went through it myself for my first handgun. It is a little confusing but actually quite a simple process.

I purchased my gun from a local dealer here in Edmonton. The dealer called the Registry while I was waiting at the shop, and started the transfer process which would transfer the handgun from their business to me. As soon as they got off the phone they gave me a referance number that I was to use when I called the Registry. The dealer suggested it would take at least 5 days. After 5 days I called the registry (1-800-731-4000) and gave them my referance number. They told me that the firearm transfer was complete. They than directed my phone call to the CFO to get the 24hr ATT to transport the gun back to my house. The CFO asked me what day I would like to pick up the gun, they than asked me if I would like the transfer notification and the tempory ATT faxed to my fax machine or to the dealer. I said to the dealer would be fine. On Saturday I went to the dealer and picked up my gun (take a trigger lock and secure case to take it home with you.) Once it was home I called the CFO again(same phone number as above) and asked for a long term ATT. No problem was the reply and they mailed it out to me. Takes only a couple of days. That is it. It's really not that bad.

Don't mean to hijack the tread, but I've been waiting 2 weeks for my ATT. Does it normally take this long?

It depends on which province you're in. If you're out west you can call the CFO and they will fax you a copy of your long term ATT. If you are in Ontario it seems to take a lot longer though.... you might be waiting a while. I'm not sure how long it takes in the other provinces.

So you dont have to get one mailed, you can get it faxed instead to the gun shop if you want to take it (the handgun) home that day?

Short term is usually faxed to the gun store when thr transfer is completed. For long terms you have to apply in writing by mail, fax or delivering it to the office in Surrey. The long term ATT will be mailed out.

I have my temp. ATT and have taken my pistol home. I was just wondering if it were normal to wait a couple of weeks for the long term ATT to be mailed out. I've tried calling Melissa, but have yet to get a call back. I guess I'll have to wait a little longer.

She's awfully busy. The wait times vary on how backlogged she is. Most of the time the long term ATT's show up within a couple of weeks after application, but every so often things get so behind there that it may 6-8 weeks before they turn up in the mail.
