OK, I have a restricted firearm. I live in Ontario.

I have no club membership or LTATT.

But I want to go on a trip to Alberta to shoot with some friends. Will my CFO issue me a STATT to go there, even though I have no current club membership or LTATT.

"...have a restricted firearm..." On what permit?
They'll likely tell you a club membership is required just to own a restricted firearm.

I dont think you need either of those two things.

In Ontario, you do not need to belong to a club to get an LTATT. Going on a trip to Alberta? All you need is to call the CFO and explain what you want, I doubt you'll need any sort of invitation.

PS, is it possible to go through the states without a form 6 (need a hunting license though) but I would really hate to see the argument at the border. And you would still need a border ATT.

We have had out of province shooters attend our matches. Their home province CFO wanted an invitation. I wrote the invitations for them.

But what if your not going to attend a match? I think the OP is just going to shoot with friends during his stay in AB?

He is going to need an ATT valid for his activities in AB.
I suppose a CFO might issue an ATT for target shooting as a guest at unspecified ranges, on unspecified dates.
Best thing to do would be to phone the CFO.

There will be no argument at US Customs. You cannot temporary import a firearm into the US without a valid Form 6NIA.

The permit is an RPAL.

I just bought this firearm a few weeks ago. My CFO approved the transfer in 5 days, without demanding any sort of evidence of club membership. I just told the CFC the club I intended to join, no other questions after that. I might not join anymore because I will essentially be working in Korea for all of next year.

I just want to transport it to Alberta to shoot with my friends for a few days. Is this much to ask?

Whoa there Ontarioshooter. ALL an RPAL does is allow you to buy & sell restricted firearms. You absolutely MUST have an ATT to transport said firearms back and forth to the gunrange/gun club that also by the way has a permit for a restricted range.

And you absolutely must have an ATT to transport your restricted firearm to AB. Better call the CFO. In my opinion they are not going to issue it. Good luck

I tried to get a STATT to go from Ab to BC to shoot with a buddy and was told that I needed a written invitation from the range I was going to. Turned out to be too much bother so I just shot my buddy's guns while I was there. I really think this system is flawed when it's easier for me to take my guns to the US than it is to another province.

Your only other option if you for whatever reason aren't issued the ATT is to temporarily change ownership and ship them out to one of your friends. Than have your friend transport them to the range under his ATT and go shooting. It's retarted...........I know but these are the only legal options you have.

Chimo: that is so true! Makes no sense why ontarioshooter should have issues. Sounds like he'll have easier time to transferring his guns to his friend in AB. Our laws makes no sense if he gets a no go b/c not belonging to a club in Ontario. :(

I would like to take my handguns into the US and it sounds very easy, even my instructor said so, but with all the hassle just crossing boarder without firearms, I refuse to take my handguns with me or long rifles. I'll just shoot my cousin's.

You don't get LTATT's in Ontario. They have to be applied for by your club. Join a club and ask for your ATT A.S.A.P. Then just call the club In the other province, or have your freind get you permission from the club. Shouldn't be that hard just get them to fax it to you. But yeah Ontario, and Quebec are retarded on these matters. Our CFO is retarded for sure.

I find that's it's easier to cross the border with guns than without. As soon as you tell them you have firearms that's all they care about. And as long as your paperwork is in order you're good to go.

Wow, that opinion is completely at odds with what I read on the ATF website

Q40. I'm Canadian and am going to be driving through the United States as a short cut to get from one part of Canada to another part of Canada. I'm going to have a rifle with me. What documentation will I need at U.S. Customs?

A. You do not need a Form 6NIA import permit from ATF because you are not temporarily bringing your gun in for hunting or other lawful sporting purposes. You also do not need a DSP-61 import license from the State Department, because there is an exception to their license requirement that applies in this situation. However, you do need to have a valid hunting license from a State within the United States to make your possession of the firearm legal while you are in the United States.
