This is a public service to all my fellow Benelli owners. If you own a Benelli shotgun and ever need to remove the c-clip (adding a mag extension, removing the limiting plug, etc) Please, please Just buy a set of 90 degree angle snap ring pliers. They're the right tool for the job and make doing it laughably easy.

While doing research I saw all manners of tools being forced into the mag tube to get the c-clip out, always being accompanied by a "Watch out, this thing comes flying out and you could lose an eye!" OR you could just use the correct tool. Put your hand over the clip while compressing it, and it all comes out nice and easy. I splurged and bought mine from a Snap On tools dealer. They're strong, they're lifetime warranty and cost me a whopping 27 bucks. Very worthwhile investment from where I'm sitting.

I don't have the part number handy, but I believe it was these ones:

Hopefully at least one person is helped by this.

Oh man. Almost lose an eye?

Dumbest thing I ever did... staring at a firing pin on a 1911 as I was pushing in on the 'Series 80' safety, the firing pin literally makes contact with my eyeball, enough to mark (i.e. bruise) it. Closest I ever came to losing an eye. You only do that once.

Cheers~

***EDIT TO ADD: I do own a Benelli. I do own proper Snap Ring Pliers****

Having removed literally dozens, all I have ever used was a small screwdriver and just pry it out.
thumb over the tube so it doesn't "take out an eye"
Never any drama, 3 seconds to do it.

But hey, new tools are always cool.

Especially when they're inexpensive and make the job easier. For what it's worth, prying on a retaining ring can deform/ weaken it.
