Hi guys.. I am looking at getting my first Enfield and (of course ) I have a question. Its a Savage #4 mk1. From my limited knowledge it appears unaltered. The front sight assembly seems to be canted to the right by about 3-4 degrees. Is this fixable? Thanks.

The front blade on No4 rifles can be adjusted horizontally (or changed entirely), so to that extent the answer is yes. It may have been aligned there intentionally (no big deal, just looks awkward, but is not unusual) so shoot it before you drift it. And lastly if you mean the whole sight block is rotated, then that is not easily fixable as the barrel is incorrectly indexed.

Midnight, you said it was canted to the right, this is not as bad as to the left as that means the barrel is under indexed and may be able to be corrected by a gunsmith with a very minimum of work. Also the bbl may just be loose. IF the price is right it still may be worth it.

Another thing to consider is that if it is under indexed and it is tight this is likely a factory flaw, such is the nature of wartime expediency. A part of the rifle's history and probably still shoots acceptably. Things to look for if this is in fact the case is if the blade is offset in the block and looks like it was staked at that point. IF the blade is centered, the barrel is off. Either way an under-indexed barrel is less of a concern than an over indexed bbl.

There was supposed to be a thin lead crush washer between the body and barrel when the barrel was screwed in. If this is missing, it can make it impossible to index a barrel properly. You can make one out of a lead toothpaste tube (if you can find one) or just get a bit of lead sheeting from a plumbing supply.
