Other than the usual Kolpin-type gun boots, what's a good way to mount and carry a scoped rifle on an ATV?

Some of my rifles have target scopes with tall turrets, so they won't go in the gun boots.

Need something waterproof/dustproof. Anyone have ideas?

I use an el-cheapo plastic gun case. I cut a few holes in the one side of it and use small tie down straps to hold it down to the front rack of the quad. The case can be flipped open and the rifle will be in hand nearly as quick as the Kolpin type.

I have a Kolin gun boot that I attach the mount for on the rear rack on my Yamaha. It protects well, especially for longer firearms and when you're trying to get a ways in to the back country.
In addition to that, I also have a mount called a 'Pack Rack'. Basically, it's a pair of U-shaped mounts with a heavy rubber like coating that mount on the handle bars. To hold the firearm in place, each U-shaped mount has a heavy rubber band. This works fairly well for short guns and quick access. The down side, guns are out in the weather and subject to the rigors of a rough ride. That was one of the reasons I picked up a Marlin 1895GS in .45-70. I have a Brno ZH304 in 7x75R & 12ga. that would be handy to mount there as well. I think I 'need' a short SS shotgun now.;)

I use new generation Koplin gun boots, and I have a rifle with Farrell picanty rail and "tall" scope, no problem, fits great.
I think they work good to protect the firearm, also, mine has a wheel at the point, where you attach the boot to the ATV, so you can choose whatever angle you like, as long as it clears the fender.

Good Luck

I have a Kolpin Gun Boot and it's servicable but I am not realy impressed with it. The seams on the bottom were splitting within 2 weeks after I bought it. Just not well made, although the seams have not opened up anymore since.
It is also way to difficult to access your rifle quickly, and stupidly noisy as well to remove the stock piece, so I generally carry it with (whatever rifle I'm using) my gun stuffed into it, and a "sock" over the gun to protect it from mud and water spray off the tires.

There aren't a lot of better options though. A hard gun case strapped on is about as good. I always use one to take a back-up rifle on my hunts...

sling

have a gun boot but it beats the rifle too much. like the yokes across the front rack best. easer on the rifle unless you happen to rollover twice lol
also use a safri sling holds the rifle up right across your chest

The original question was about a waterproof and dust proof carry system.

I already have lots of ways to carry shotguns and rifles on the ATV otherwise.

Right now I use a short piece of plastic gutter channel clamped into a set of Kolpin rubber grippers (the ratchet kind), and in the channel I place a rhino case which is somewhat waterproof/dustproof, but not 100%.

Buy your self a plastic hard case that the gun will fit into and mount that case onto the ATV. I have two ATV's and two of my friends also made their own using a board (1x4) attaching the case to the board with screws, attach the board to the bike with two bungee cords onto the right side of the bike if you are right handed. The board goes from front rack to back rack and placed so it keeps inside the width of the bike leaving enough room for your right leg. The size of the gun case determines whether it stands on it's side or lays on it's botton. Sorry I can not show a picture as the bike is at home and my case is at the camp. I used a cheap Walmart $15 case for the last 7 years and it is water and dust proof. The board has to be longer than the gun case and make stops under the board that fit into the bike racks so it does not move. Bungee cords hold it tight and are easy to put on and off. Make your own desigin. Its works better, is cheaper and faster than a gun boot.

I have a Plano Gunslinger gunboot that has a zippered soft case inside of it that you can pull out. I usually leave the top of the boot at camp and just use the soft case zippered up, riding in the boot. dust and waterproof.

I've always used the "horn" style mount that bolts to the handlebars. Used them for years with great success. Only problem is that it positions the rifle horizontally in front of the driver, so you run the risk of the rifle getting hit by willows or brush if you are travelling on grown in cutlines. A guard can easily be made though that will deflect brush and protect the rifle.

I have the yoke type mounted to my front rack. I have a vinyl case that I leave the rifle in in the rack, and I leave the back part of the zipper open for easier access to the rifle. Works real well. I have a 26" barreled Browning M1000 eclipse with the BOSS on it, and it rests there nicely. Also have used it for 30" bbl'd pump shotguns as well as shorter bolt guns and SS rifles as well. Cost is minimal, and if you happen to be out after dark, you cased and legal.
