In the mid 1990s I had the opportunity to fire both on many occasions, infact one time, the Owen we fired so much it was too hot to hold. As for the F1's, its unique, but I liked it. Sadly the SMGs I fired were later destroyed, along with 1000's of others which were then still held in western Sydney in storage, now long sent back to Woolongong's Port Kembla for smelt.
Since then, the BRENs in .303 and in 7.62mm, along with L1A1's (about 28,000), L2A1's, M14's (yes M14's), Vickers, and the M60 GPMGs have all met their fate, including tonnes of SMLEs, Lee Metfords, .38 S&W Victorys, captured war prizes such as AKs, SKSs, Mosin Nagants, MAT-49s, Jap rifles, MGs and pistols, MP-40s, M1 Garands, etc. After the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, many messes surrendered their thophies (under pressure from their Cos who wre under pressure from elsewhere), and many RSLs surrendered their trophys too. Sad to see a countries own military heritage go up in smoke (literally) all to become politically correct. I was present when dump truck after dump truck was loaded and sent to Port Kembla, so this aint no BS.
Cheers,
Wes
