I would say the mayor colonies of the comon-wealth and the union jack.

useless info bt the SA crest has changed, on the shield is the old provinces's symbols the woman holding the anchor top left is the Cape, the 2 black-wildebeeste is Natal the ox-wagon Transvaal and the citrus tree the Free state. The lion is brittain and it's holding two gold bars, which symoblizes th gold fields of the Wit-waters rand and also unity (there being two)

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Boer War, is this possible if any South Africans fought with the Commonwealth? ?
Are these national symbols too early for this era, therefore probably WW1?

Could this be a "camp flag" from then...

Wow. It shure got more attention than i figured it would. To answer your question Dingus...yes it is mine. The material is almost a linen. very thin.The coat of arms in the lower right reads "ADVANCE AUSTRALIA" and the one in the upper right reads "EX UNITATE VIRES"

Ive had this thing for about 10 years and have never known what it was.

The Union of South Africa was apparently from 1910 to 1961 so it would put it after the Boer War period. Good call Brutus! And thanks for the information Boer Seun.

Yes definately after the union, I would guess WWI or WWII

Within this website is a link for "ceremonial ' flags, in other words un-offical flags never meant to be run up a flagpole.

This flag represents the British Empire, and was sold as a soverignor item to be hung inside patriotic citizens homes. Probably sold during the coronation time of a king of royal bloodlines.

Dont feel bad, I was a johnny come lately on this too!
