Was out looking at Glocks today, I want to pick up a 5th Gen G17. Both the stores I visited only had USA-made Glocks (for this particular model anyways, I didn't look at the entire lineup).

Looking online, it seems that most stores either show photos of the USA-made Glocks, or have a footnote indicating that they're Made in USA.

I was really hoping to pick up an Austrian-made one (if for no reason other than that's where the company originated).

Anyone have any insight into why it only seems to be the American guns that are available?

Looking at a Gen 5 because of the smooth grip then?
Otherwise consider a Gen 3. Plenty about in LNIB condition.
An Austrian made model should be easy to find...you might even get one with the frying pan finish!
All the best...!

NAFTA was the reason, and also shorter and less transport cost

Glock had to set up shop in the US to sell 380 pocket pistols (they wouldn't meet batfe import requirements if made in Austria, but if they're made in the US they're not imported). No point in only making that pistol so they also make other models. If the model you want is made in the USA, it's cheaper for everyone (likely you included) to get a US model.

In addition, if you could readily pick which factory you bought it from, it could perpetuate the idea that one is better than the other, where glock has a reputation for reliability and they likely want people to only care that its a Glock and not care where it was made.
