Need one please.

I have a browning auto 5 magnum. I tried light #4 loads today and it would only fire single shot.

I first tried the heavy load friction setup as a starting point then went to light load as suggested in you tube. Still single shot, so I loaded up the browning page and tried what browning said was a light load set up... Still single shot.

Any ideas?

May sound like a stupid question but, has the firearm been completely cleaned? I have disassembled a few for friends and one that I bought for myself. All had decades worth of crud inside and all functioned much better once cleaned out.

cheers,

and, is your selector in the corrector position? I am assuming this is an older model Auto 5. Not at all familiar with the new ones.

cheers,

Not a dumb question at all...
I had cleaned only the field strip half. I don't have the thin screw drivers need to take down without damage so I didn't touch it. I can see behind the bolt face is tons of crud.

Yes it's an older 5 1971

Get a set of micro screw drivers and have at 'er! There's a few good videos on youtube to help you out if you get stuck. The bolt spring et al can get mucked up pretty good and a good cleaning makes a big difference. Careful though once disassembled as some worn areas in the receiver can get really sharp.
John Moses sure liked to make things complicated and yet, very reliable. Once you've done it a couple times it really isn't that bad.

Good luck.

Lol, ok I'll try and find some smithing screw drivers. Then I'll shoot it again some time this week and give an up date if that worked

"Light 4's" won't run your gun. It was designed to handle 3" magnum 1 7/8 oz. lead loads on the HEAVY setting and 1 1/4oz. to 1 3/8oz. loads on the "LIGHT" setting. If you set it to light and oil the mag tube it may work but not super reliably.

Don't forget to polish the chamber when you do a thorough cleaning. Will not help with the light load issue in a magnum gun but does help with the cycling of proper loads.

That think was disgusting inside. I had to grind down a screw driver until it fit perfectly in the small screws. I then cleaned the whole mess and I'm talking sticky sledge and pine needles. I wd 40'd let sit, wiped, wd 40'd, showered, wiped, wd 40'd wiped then oiled with my favorite oil. Reassembled and reset the fiction and brake rings to magnum load. Now that she's clean I'll try again but with 3" loads and see what happeneds.

Wait out for Tuesday guys

Every Auto5 I disassembled had pine needles in it. Cool that they get used! How does the action feel after a good cleaning?

Pretty slick, before cleaning I tried to press the barrel down to replicate the recoil action and it was hard to do so. Much easier now

Roger that jpbcal, I did just that. The grossest thing was the beaver tail

Well as said I clean the piss out of it. I then replaced the friction rings to a magnum load. I then use 3 " win #2 high velocity loads in it and guess what.... She ran flawlessly. I did not even notice the "weird" recoil I've heard about. Just seemed like recoil to me, and not very much at that! In fact it was a joy to shoot and I nailed the targets easily.

Thanks to everyone here who help me out with their advise on the auto 5
