Auto-ordnance M1 carbine?good ,bad ,?

Sorry, no personal experience with AutoOrd's M1 Carbines, but I did own one of their semi-auto Thompson M1928s about 15 years ago. If those were any indication of their quality control, then you would be far better off finding yourself a USGI M1 Carbine. The new-manufacture Thompsons were horrible. Nice external finishing/bluing, but the internal machining and fitting were by far the worst I have ever encountered. The action was like sand-paper, I cut myself repeatedly on internal burrs and sharp edges while cleaning the upper receiver, etc. Not to mention that the striker-fired action resulted in a trigger-pull exceeding 25 lbs....

When I finally acquired a CA USGI Thompson M1A1, the difference was night and day. The action was like glass, the machining was superb, etc. Auto Ord's quality-control quite evidently went way, way down-hill following WW II.

My advice would be to stay away from Auto-Ordnance products. Unless their new ownership by Khar Arms has somehow resulted in current-production items that an order of magnitude better in terms of craftsmanship. Honestly - the older Auto-Ord stuff is abject crap. It looks pretty, but it is crap.

FWIW as a former Auto-Ord owner,

Generally, yes. I've seen non-restricted ones from time to time. It might be the way to go if you want to be able to take it to places other than the range.

If you want to go with a historical one (i.e. WWII mfr.) then restricted is it.

stay with USGI they made 6 million + m1 carbines in ww2 there are tons in Canada (if i dont get them all first!) a copy is that a copy the AO carbines are restricted and did not get the best write up in a recent gun mag

I didn't know this was a competition, hehe. I have 3 of them, one intended and two that just worked out that way.

oh a wise guy eh.....:)

beat this then.... in the rare department

2 irwin pedersen m1 carbines

seriously the new AO carbines are not that great according to a write up in a recent gun mag i cant recall which one through , buy a GI and be happy if you MUST go commerical plansfield is not too bad

Think I Can Beat It!

IP's certainly are very rare and collectable! Mostly because very few were produced as they didn't pass inspection with the US Ordanence Department and were not accepted for production and were never issued. Out of 6.5M carbines Rock-Ola music box co. produced about 235K. I believe the smallest production of WWII. Mine is from 1944. Not bragging just proad of my find! It's a total blast at the range.

But for accuracy I'll take my Matched Out 5.4M SA that I bought thru the CMP. It will shoot 1 MOA at 100 yards if I do my part.

I wouldn't buy a commercial copy of the M1 Carbine. There are enough of them around and the commerial stuff will always be substandard.

they are restricted due to barrel length 18"

there are a few out there USGI guns with an aftermarket longer barre 19" or 20" barrel

they are mostly in VERY good shape as the U.S .30 carbine ammo was NON-corrosive most are mismatched parts due to rebuilds over the years and many went overseasto fight the commies after ww2

Strike me down for digging up this thread but I was in P&D just the other day and low and be hold they had a Auto -ordnance 1911 .45ACP. it didn't feel as good in my hand as a Springfield and not even as nice a Norinco, but still ,there it was .I asked the lad behind the counter about if they were getting any M1 carbines from AO ,he said no,but still....
Any body else interested???

"...commerial(sic) stuff will always be substandard..." Nonsense.
"...barrel length?..." Yep. And being semi-auto. The rumoured excuse was that Montreal bike gangs were cutting them down and using them a lot for their varied criminal activities.
Just after the Carbine was declared evil in 1978, Iver Johnson made some 19" barreled carbines. Not many around though.

most of the civi copies I've seen run the gamut from crude to dangerous...buy a real one, and if you have to re-barrel it. If you hand load stick to military ballistics max or you'll shear the locking lugs off.
