I'm interested in buying the Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine as my first firearm.
I have been reading alot of the reviews, but I have a couple of questions;

1. Since it is a non-restricted firearm, what is the limit for the magazine capacity? Could we use the 10, 15, 20, and 30 round magazine?
2. Does anyone know any Canadian retailer that sell the Paratrooper M1 Carbine (Folding Stock)? If not, could we buy it directly from the Auto Ordnance themselves?
3. What are the some of the pros and cons of the firearm?

Thanks

5 round magazines are maximum legal, because its centerfire AND semi-auto. Restricted or Non-Restricted doesnt factor into this.

No idea about Paras...the cartridge is decent, but its no longer cheap or as widely available as it once was...also its not got enough for hunting larger game, I think anything larger than a fox wont be prudent. But you likely arent buying this for hunting, so enjoy!

I've been thinking about these carbines as well and the local gunshop had one for sale, so I took a look- I was impressed by the finish and the size- It looks like it would be fun to shoot and seemed easy to handle, but in the end I decided against getting one- for that price I coud get a mini 14. The pros and cons from my point of view:

Pros:
Easy to handle, looks great, some USGI accessories are still availalbe- the ammo pouches that fit on the stock. Would be fun to shoot at the range.

Cons:
Expensive, ammo seems hard to find (although it would probably be easy to reload as its basically a pistol cartridge)

If it was less expensive, I'd take a second look.

As an aside, I also looked at the 22 cal version (Chiappa) and was really disappointed with the amount of plastic on it.

Ammo CAN be cheap, CanAm had some dirt cheap 30 Carbine a while back - $13/50 IIRC. The carbine is one of those guns, you have to use one to appreciate it. Also, the round has slightly less energy than a 44Mag, so anything you'd hunt with a handgun (in a civilzed country) you can hunt with a carbine (again in a civilized country).

The 5-round mag limit is a PITA. For an extra couple of hundred bucks, you could consider a non-restricted pistol caliber carbine like a JR or TD which use 10-round pistol mags. The savings in ammo cost will more than cover the extra purchase price.

auto ordinance comes into canada with paratrooper models, i had mine in one from factory bt have replaced it with synthetic (it was getting beat up in the bush). It doesn't cost anymore to have it come with it, but i can be harder to find.

IT is by far my favorite firearm in my collection that sees the most use.

It is incredibly reliable, as long as you aviod corwin arms 10 round mags, for some reason they sit to low and cause failure to feeds.

Stick with auto ordnance mags and KCI 30's

Reloading is super easy and incredibly cheap. its treated as a straight wall case, so even though its semi auto you can use a lee loader kit for it. it takes all of 14.5 grains of H110 to have it zipping out at 2000 ft/s and you can load a wide variety of .308 bullets up to 130 gr (110 is best) from cheap berry FMJ, PPU hunting soft tips, hornady Vmax and even SST's.

it shoots a nice tight group, and has enough power to take a deer at 100m.

with low recoil and report it is a joy to shoot all day.

here is a few clays that didn't break... 100m with irons

holy necro thread... just looked at the ops timestamp

Corwin Mags worked fine in mine. After I changed out the trigger housing. Auto Ordanance was too loose with all my magazine. Actually they( Corwin's magazines) worked fine in all my M1 Carbines. Maybe cause they all have USGI trigger groups, even the first and third gen Universals. YMMV but for me no problemo :)
