I'm contemplating buying an Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine - mostly because they're not restricted.

So, I would appreciate all input from CGN Members that have owned these, and have experience with them.

Thanks, Dave

I think they are pretty good. AA makes the carbine in a bunch of different configurations, even the ParaTrooper version. The stupid Kanada rules means an extra inch & a half is OKAY vs the standard military length.
M1 carbine ammo can be scarce & pricey, so I think you would need to consider reloading in your over-all buying considerations…..

One of my only guns I never thought of selling.
Very fun to shoot and accuracy is not bad.
Yes Ammo can be be quite expensive. I don’t reload but I do keep my brass because I’m sure I can sell it to someone who reloads.

USGI magazines hit or miss with my old one. Some worked great some didn't feed correctly. Only remedy buy lots of 5/15 or 5/30 magazines :)

Seriously the M1 carbine's biggest weak point is the magazines, and Auto Ordnance's M1 carbines aren't as good as the USGI ones and it exacerbates the issue.

The biggest problem I've found with many 5/15 rd G.I. carbine mags that fail to work properly was the re-installation of the magazine spring backwards after the "Pinning" process and from the locking nibs on the back of the mag body becoming excessively worn. Seldom is the problem the feed lips, unless someone has dropped the mag on the feed lips one to many times...

Sometimes, if too long a rivet was used, it can bind the mag spring during operation, also watch for mags pinned tightly to 5rds as they often have feed troubles with at least the first round.

I have a paratrooper model. It was a nightmare and rarely got through 5 rounds without a stoppage of some kind. Handloads of various flavor, all sorts of milspec and commercial as well, no luck.

I found a great deal on a mint USGI trigger housing and installed it. Gun runs perfectly now and is definitely a favorite. Still trying to find reasonably priced armorer's tools and a couple other accessories with no luck.

From what I hear the newer guns run well but mine should be a "newer" gun so your experience may or may not be different.

I have had the AA M1 for about 4 years, AA warns not to use GI mags, that they do not feed well in these rifles, I have just used the AA mags and have had no problem. Only problem I had was that the rifle was shooting high, probably because I changed the rear site from the factory L shaped peep sight to the adjustable rear sight, I had to add metal to the front sight

There's one (NR) in the EE now. The early AO's had 'bad' springs, inthe Rifle itself. Reveiws of early models were hit n miss. People reported changing springs on those earlier ones, & rifle functioned very relaibly. I don't know the cut off, but, anything more-so manufactired in the last 10 years form AO, has better quality internal springs. Reviews seem good.

Also to ad, the Original GI mags, on the batte field were practically considered 'Throw away'/not a multi use item.. Think it was due to the springs. There's Documentries on utube that mention this.

Newly made Korean magz, seem to be the best of what's currently 'new' out there. {15 & 30 rnd available}

I had an AO paratrooper for several years. I shouldn’t have sold it. The USGI mags worked or didn’t work, totally depended on the luck of the draw. AO mags worked flawlessly in my paratrooper. Fun gun to shoot and it’s groups were good.

I wasn't lucky enough to have any magazines feed. I ended up modifying an M2 mag latch to get it running but it wasn't until I replaced the entire trigger housing that it became a reliable gun. These repros have had many issues throughout their production it seems. Mine is barely 3 years old.

That one sold in a couple hours

Restricted barrel length has always been <470mm or <18.5". AO most likely manufactures them at 19" as manufacturing process side effect to make sure they don't accidently make R M1 carbines.
