This has been on my mind for a while so I would like to get your input and ideas.

I've got a lot of brass picked up from IPSC matches and general range pick up that I need to sort through. It is a slow process doing it by hand and there has to be a better way! I'm sure the major reloading companies have fancy equipment to do it but I would prefer to make something small and economical.

Do you have anything that you have made to sort brass?

Mainly interested in sorting: 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 9 mm Luger, 38 Super, 38 Special, 357 Magnum. And if possible there might even be some rifle cases in there such as: 223 Remington, 30 Carbine, etc.

Rifle cases are easy to sort out by hand so my main focus is on the handgun cases.

Most are different diameter heads but then there are a few 10mm that get picked up with the 40 S&W and same with the 38 Special and 357 Magnum and the 9mm and 38 Super.

I'm thinking of getting some heavy plastic about 1/8" thick to start with and drilling holes of the appropriate diameter.

Would you have a whole bunch of holes for each calibre or just one of each?

How does the brass flow over the holes?

Hand operated or use small motors. I would prefer, of course, to just dump the brass in and let it run and sort it out.

I already have a Dillon case feeder that maybe could be linked in to provide the brass with the head down and one at a time through a tube.

I prefer to sort my brass before it goes in the tumbler so 9mm aren't stuck in 40 S&W, etc. so the device should be able to take a bit of dirt without jamming up.

Sorting by length too would help sort out the brass stuck in each other. Hmm...

Your ideas would be appreciated! Tell us what you have made! :D

There is already such a device.

Here is one idea. Kind of a semi-automated take on CanAm's post above

Buy one of those drum type things that you use to separate the media from the cases after tumbling. In the first one, widen the slots so that the smallest of the cartridges (9mm) you have will fit through. Dump them in and crank away... In theory all the 9mm, and I suppose .38 super will be separated out. Make one for each size of case you need to separate, and go from smallest to biggest and you should be mostly done.

If you really wanted to I suppose you could fashion a small electric motor to it so you wouldn't have to turn them by hand

Don't know what to do about separating different case lengths though.

The proper solution is a robotic arm (with tactile force sensors) and a machine vision system interfaced to a high end, server grade PC. The system will cost $20,000 (at least) and will require a 3/4 ton flatbed for mobility. Ok... who's in?

Have used one, consist of two rotatig shafts about6' long, on an incline, turning toward each other. You set them at a taper and the different diameter brass falls out at different spots along the run. Simply place buckets where the brass starts falling.
