Auto's: S/A, D/A, Hybrid/CG,XYZ????

S/A= Hammer has to be cocked manually (typical 1911 type). Has a lighter trigger pull (sorry I don't know the exact weight)

D/A= pulling the trigger will #### the hammer. By pulling the trigger further, it will fire the gun (think of a double action revolver. The hammer is down; by pulling the trigger, it will #### the hammer then fire). D/A's usually have heavy trigger pulls.

S/A,D/A. First shot can be shot double action, the following shots are in single action mode. (first shot, heavy trigger pull, follow ups are less trigger pull)

DAO-Double action only. Gun does not go into s/a

Hybrid (not sure, but I think it means that the frame and slide are made of two different materials. ie. Steel slide, aluminum frame).

striker fired types...Glock etc... Trigger cocks and fires gun... no exposed hammer. Safety in trigger mechanism..

There are of course other types without exposed hammers, some of these are DA-SA types and have either no external safeties or have them..but also use a decocker to safely drop the hammer on a live round... Sig 226, HK USP etc..

Striker fired doesn't necessarily mean as Ardent described just to clarify. What he describes as having a smoother trigger pull than traditional DAO is that many of these systems use precocked systems to lighten the pull.

The P99 for example is traditionally a SA/DA striker fired pistol. ie no exposed hammer but the first shot is DA. There are however DAO versions and a precocked version called the QA(I think)...quick action...
