Hi All,

I plan on acquiring an SKS and a Mosin 91/30 within the next year or two depending on how work goes however I cannot decide which one to get first. I am leaning towards an SKS first but not sure.

I've been shooting since I was a kid with my friends but no one in my family has ever to my knowledge owned guns.

My plan so far has been get 6 guns total as its all I have room in the safe for and I have 3 of them already. I wanted a shotgun for hunting birds, it was first then a Ruger 10/22 got that second, then a bolt .22 lr got that third to show my children how to shoot. The next will be a hunting bolt either a 30-06 or a .308. I am leaning towards a .308 and hopefully will get the same style bolt as the .22 so the kids can transition up to it.

The last two will be the SKS and the Mosin but my concern is they become restricted or disappear entirely before I can purchase one, or that the ammo becomes hard to find or so expensive it renders them useless. Before you ask I'm not a reloader and have no plan or desire to do so. I know there is a lot of ammo around now and availability is not a problem yet but I suspect it will be sooner or later it always is.

Now my suspicion is since the 7.62x54R is a cartridge that's been around forever and since the Mosins are a 5 shot fixed mag bolt action I suspect they are the most likely to be around long term while the semi auto SKS 7.62x39 I could see the ammo drying up or the government putting restrictions on importing the gun or just banning it outright.

Don't have a lot of experience but am starting to think I should buy an SKS ASAP.....

Wow that's incredibly helpful. I know slightly less then I did before you posted that. If the plan was to be completely unhelpful in any way.

It's kind of a personal preference if your into the history side get a mosin first they have seen both world wars and 54r is th only full power cartridge you can shoot on the cheap. But the sks is more portable and (modern), the true answer is buy both. I personally bought a mosin first and learned how to clean corrosive properly then an sks
I don't think the RCMP is stupid enough to ban the sks there are way to many in canada it would be a huge outroar

The 91/30 won't be hard to find a year from now, neither will the sks. Will prices be higher? For sure.

Ammo for both will be available for as long as we are able to own guns in this country, the concern is the price. You can buy 1000rnds of norinco x54r for $249 right now - maybe it will be $300 next year. As supply goes down the price goes up. Proof of this is bulgarian silver tip surplus. I bought a couple crates while the going was good, can't seem to find it anymore

They call it "Russian" but both cases I ordered were Bulgarian Silver Tip

No worries about 7.62x39 drying up. Millions and millions of firearms use that caliber for food. It'll be around longer than we are.

If you're worried about the SKS becoming restricted or *gasp*, prohibited, then get it first. Between the two the SKS is the more likely to be punished, lol. It's scarier than the big ol' bolt Mosin!

I personally don't see either becoming rare or not available in the near future.

Wow.....you're kinda overthinking this.

I will attempt to make my post more overtly helpful. The SKS won't be re-classified any time soon, but you should probably just go and buy both ASAP. Many retailers still have adequate stock so prices havent climbed much yet, but they will significantly. Same goes for ammo. "You are thinking about buying an SKS or mosin in the next year or two?" C'mon man. They cost about the same as a tank of gas

They are both very different rifles with different operating systems. They are both very common and cheap. I don't foresee anything changing in the next few years. Since you have a year to decide, I'm sure you can get your hands on both and try a few rounds thru them so you can decide which suits your needs better.
At under $1000 for both WITH crates of surplus ammo, I think adding both to your collection would be worthwhile.
The SKS is pleasant to shoot but more complicated than what you currently own to strip and clean and you have to strip and clean after every session if you use corrosive ammo. The Mosin is one of the simplest bolt actions to take apart but it kicks like a mule.
In the end, the decision is yours!

For the price and since you want both, just get them. It is probably a good idea to familiarize yourself with the takedown and reassembly, to cleaning them properly. Youtube has a ton of videos which are very helpful, and you probably all ready know that when using surplus ammo you must clean them after each use. Once you start researching the rifles you may want a certain manufacturer, hex or round receivers (Mosin), BBQ paint or reblued (SKS). Take the time and make sure you get what your looking and there are great people to deal with here. Westrifle and weimajack (on EE) are two dealers that I would consider if ordering online. I have purchased from both. These guns are highly addictive. Good luck!!

Also on your list should be a Finn capture M91 or other variant. (and, as stated previously, an SVT is a must!) Not to be overlooked is a M38 or M44 as well.....damn Red rifles are like rabbits!

Canada Ammo has a package deal on both an SKS with a crate of ammo and a Mosin Nagant with a crate of ammo, both are $400, although the SKS deal appears to be out of stock and I do believe the ammo is Norc corrosive. There's also SFRC, they normally have package deals although it's kind of a 'get them while they're hot' sort of thing. Deals also pop up on the EE every once in a while too.

As for keeping your collection to six guns because that's all your safe holds? We'll just see about that.

Mosin is definitely the one you want but since you're only getting one and likely plan to hang on to it for a while look for a really good one- maybe with a bit of originality. The pre-war ones in original condition are pretty nice rifles. If you shop around you may be able to find someone with a good one who'll sell it to you for $250.00 to $300.00.

I have a Mosin sniper and 2 SKS's. I love the Mosin best although the SKS's are fun too. The SKS is harder to clean, but no biggie once you've done a few times. My Mosin is pretty accurate with the old 4x power scope and for me, I use a rubber butt pad as it does kick some. I think there is a rule that if you are a Canadian gun owner, it is required to have at least one SKS, at least I haven't met anyone who owns firearms and doesn't have one.
