Hi there,

I was wondering if someone migh be able to provide me some info on what types of competitions or leagues that would be available to me here in the WInnipeg region. I know there is Cowboy Action Shooting out of the Winnipeg Pistol and Revolver Club. I know that IPSC and IDPA are also in the area but i am not really sure if there would be a division in those assoc that would fit me. What i'm looking for, if it even exists, is a division where stock guns are used and where 9mm would be a viable caliber choice. I'm looking at purchasing a pistol for competition but I'm finding it hard to make a choice with all the potential restrictions and or requirements that would need to be met and at the same time buying a gun that appeals to me. If i knew exactly what kind of leagues or divisions people competed in within the area I would feel safer in making my pistol choice

Thanks for readin and for your help. :)

For your defensive pistol needs see: www.mdpl.ca
For your IPSC needs see: www.ipscmanitoba.ca

Both clubs are based out of Selkirk Game & Fish Handgun Club, and also shoot around the province.

Both have awesome guys to shoot with, and we shoot each others matches. Check the respective websites for open training, new shooter orientations, etc. We're here for a good time.

Next MDPL match is this Saturday June 9th at Selkirk Game & Fish, next IPSC match is Sunday Jun 24th at the same club. Come and check it out!

I'm shooting standard IPSC with an XD this year in .40 I might not be competitive but I had a blast at the steel challenge.

9mm puts you in minor so you may not be winning trophys - but I'll bet you'll still have fun.

If you want action there is nothing like Cowboy Action Shooting! Yeehaw

I don't know what you have now but I would think you should have something to shoot CDP(IDPA) right now. If you still have a 1911 then you can shoot that. I thought you had a HighPower or clone and that would be great. Odds are you have what you need now. Start shooting then think what you may want to move to.

I understood that there was no "running" and "gunning" in cowboy shooting?

Ah but an XD9 puts you in PRODUCTION division where EVERYONE is shooting minor so you can in fact be VERY Competative.

Ah but no one in Manitoba is shooting production right now. But I guess between Rob and I that would make 2 of us. Pretty good odds...lol

We do a lot of movement in CAS out west in BC and Alberta. It is just that most of us are old, slow and fat so we don't look like we are moving. LOL

Typically no. As far as I know SASS rules do not allow it. Most clubs follow the SASS rule book even though we are not affiliated with SASS. (I hope this doesn't start a IDPA/CDP like rant  ) With Western 3 Gun you do shoot on the move. At WRPA we can only move with a gun with the hammer down on an empty or spent chamber.

We can take a couple of shots at a target and without re-chambering we can move to the next position, re-chamber, then to shoot. Mostly we shoot a gun dry before we move then shoot the next gun. It's a little more restrictive than the other action shooting sports but we don't require a holster course (at our club at least).

If you are interested in movement with cowboy guns do a search for Western 3 Gun and video to see it in action.
