Avalon Peninsula Birder Hunting Partner Needed

I've been getting my 6 month old pup out in the woods and fields after birds whenever possible, and she's really going for it, managing to flush out at least one every time (which I've then let her down on with my part). But she and I could really use a bird hunting buddy and dog to learn from. All my buddies hunt rabbits, lots of beagles, but no bird dogs.

Anyone on the Avalon want to take out a newbie bird hunting combo? Drop me a line. We're both (dog and me) enthusiastic to learn, just need some guidance, literally.

I've got a cabin in Conception Bay North (Cupids) if that helps.

I would love too...but I am on the west coast...what kind of dog do you have? First time out with my Brittany Spaniel was when he was 6 months. We got 15 birds that day!

Wish I was closer. One buddy has a great black Lab flusher, and another has a shorthair pointer.

Thanks guys, I got some advice by Email too.

Will try the Hearts Content barrens, thanks Xman, I actually cleaned up on rabbits near there last year and am heading up for a another rabbit day there before Xmas. Also going to try the community pasture in Cupids, thanks to my plumber, apparantly lots of partridge and the guy who used to go after them no longer can. It's right behind my cabin too.

She's half German Long-Haired Pointer, half Lab, heavily takes after her mothers appearance and behaviour (GLP), but black like her old pop. So far she's flushed grouse every time I've had her for walks around Cape St. Francis, and she actually pointed(!) a partridge, well, sort of pointed, paused and coiled, tail out, when I took her through some fields in Flat Rock. Crazy for swimming too, always into the ponds.

I've got high hopes for her!

I have two setters, but I am busy chasing moose right now. I know where there are a few partridge( ptarmigan) left if you want to go later. There is an area on the Witless Bay line that is open for running bird dogs into May. If you want your dog to be a pointer get her into birds and don't shoot any birds over her until she starts pointing on her own. If she has pointing instinct she will start to point after exposure to birds. It may take a while. If you are going to use her as a flusher then you have to control her range. Are you a member of the St. John's Rod and gun Club?
