Just curious what you guys have been getting for accuracy out of surplus lots...I have 2 rem. 700 'P' .223 / 7.62 And found that the 223 loves rem umc yellow box and the 7.62 loves IVI. Both will squeeze under an inch....Any other 'brands' I should try (surplus)

My Rifles Do Not Like :

portugese (now that I bought 600 rounds)
south african
winchester 'bulk'

No it shoots ok (sub 1 inch, barely) but the price was right..he..he .But Im a little pissed at having bought three battle packs of Portugese 762...Oh well busting rocks I guess

The only stuff I've used in .223 (haven't used any .308/7.62) was IVI and it shot pretty well, I'm gonna be shooting 7.62 to break in my barrel pretty soon and I'll see how it shoots after the break-in.

I shot some 7.62 IVI last week out of my Target Rifle. This rifle shoots 1/2 MOA or better with handloads, off my elbows with a jacket and sling. With the IVI, I was lucky to hold the 4 ring at 300 yards. It would shoot 3-4 rounds into the bull and V then throw a shot out into the 4 ring almost to the 3.

Years ago, we tested a variety of surplus ball in a TRW M-14 which I had set NM style, with a scope, off sandbags. Had FNM, WCC, IVI and some really cheap CZ or Yugo. The latter was most accurate, about 1 1/4 moa, the FNM and WCC about 2, the IVI near 3. When ball was issued for target shooting, DA had a good reputation, IVI had a reputation for fliers.
The Hirtenberg ball formerly sold by Districorp has a fine reputation.
IVI that is shooting moa must be from a very good lot.

One of our club members pulled the bullets on some IVI, moly'd them, re-threw the powder and re-seating them. They ened up shooting just over 1 MOA.
The weight of the powder is all over from -.5 grains to +.8 of the mean, brass is about 5 grain spread and the bullets about -2 to +1 grain. No wonder it shoots all over the place. Great machinegun ammo, reliable but not accurate.

I remember a fitting 'acronym' for IVI
" Impact varies immensely "
It was through my PE90 and given the fact they're sub MOA guns the 3-5 inch groups weren't doing it for me. More ammo for my AR's I guess :)

"...haven't seen their ammo anywhere..." IVI ball has never been released to the public. IVI ammo is reliable, but not particularly accurate. It wasn't made for great accuracy.
