Hi,
This is my first post here and I thought it would be fitting to add to the 870 redundancy project on the forum. :puke:
Here is my choice for my first shotgun:

I like the tacticool stuff but I want to maintain some everyday functionality. The reasons I chose this one are as follows:
Express = relatively inexpensive
Picatinny on the receiver
All black
6 in the mag, one in the hole @ 2.75\\\"
The thing on the tip that looks like a choke is actually a \\\"door breacher.\\\" I have no intention of breaching anything but this will allow me to swap chokes. I found that a number of expresses don\\\'t have threads. Plus if you look closely, the \\\"door breacher\\\" has cool looking teeth on it.

So let\\\'s have with the suggestions and all that!
Also, a recent occasion has led me to believe that the springy effect of a Knoxx Spec Ops may be not so good for me (ie. it won\\\'t smash a window as easily). Can any owners shed some light?

I have no idea why every place I\'ve used a apostrophe it is preceded by a backslash. This was not intentional.
 
Does the breeching muzzle brake actually thread into threads that can be used for chokes? I honestly don't know, but I'd make sure to look into that if you are hoping for that ability...

can't go wrong with an 870, especially one with cool looking teeth :rolleyes:
 
HobbesT, this board is monitored by anti-gun nuts and LEO (Law enforcement Officers). We do not want any stupid stories about you or your friend and his violent scare tactics.

I do not want to see you or your friend being legal honest gun owners put in jail for stupidity. So I suggest keeping your mouth shut about stories like that and I am probably most certain your friend does not appreciate the story spread on a world-wide system.

The guy at Wholesale Sports claimed that the thread will work for chokes. But on your advice, I will confirm before I buy.

IMO a great choice for shotgun. I do a lot of bushwork/ back country hiking and have chosen an 870. Its function and has survived all the abuse i can throw at it, including 8 days of being wet and completely submerged without any serious rust issues. An upgrade I did and love would be the oversize safety. Not really a good option if you are carrying it with one in the chamber, but i always carry loaded but not ready. This oversize safety ensures that if and when i need it in a hurry, there will be no issues with a safety being the reason I dont get a shot off. Anyway not sure if that fits with your application, but my $0.02 anyway...
 
what do you intend to use the gun for?

if any of your intended uses include hunting, then IMO there are many much better choices.

what Remington is doing with the tactical 870 is putting a few cheap 'tactical bling' items on it and selling it for a premium price. in the end its just an overpriced Express but with - according to forum accounts - a really $%@#ty new 'tactical' finish that flakes off.

all im saying is you can do better for the money.

(before anyone jumps to the conclusion that im just another tactical gun basher - 2/3 of my shotguns are 'tactical')

even though this is a pretty absurd question ill try and answer it. it takes a significant amount of force to spring a Knoxx stock. under full 3.5" recoil they spring back less than an inch. pretty much all shotguns have a soft recoil pad on them anyway, so theyre not exactly ideal for smashing things to begin with. a Knoxx stock will be just about as (in)effective at smashing things as a standard stock with recoil pad.

why is smashing windows one of your criteria for buying a shotgun?
ah, nevermind - dont answer, i probably dont want to know. on second thought just buy the tacticool 870.

Ok, so what is your suggestion?

There is a 150 page thread full of people advertising their zombie killing equipment. While the whole thread is a joke, the undertones rings strong. There is a minute degree of seriousness, similar to that of people here talking about \"bugging out.\" Is it really so absurd to think that I might be concerned about my ability or disability to break a window?
 
if youre referring to a home window, theyre pretty easy to break with just about anything.
a car window? you wont break one with any shotgun stock - youll break the stock.

as for my suggestion, its probably the same as i gave the other 50 guys asking every day if they should buy ###x tactical gun as their first shotgun.

if youre going to mod it anyway (you were already talking about replacing the stock), and this is your first shotgun, then pick up a 2 3/4" Wingmaster receiver for $150 and start modding away. buy a short barrel on the EE, and you can order everything else you need from Brownells (theyre great about shipping to Canada), several site sponsors, or the EE. most of the fun is in customizing and modding anyway, which is why its kindof boring to buy someone elses finished idea of a tactical gun.

or get a $299 Grizzly - the 12.5s, mag feds, whatever.

all that 870 Tactical is is an Express with a plastic triggergroup, a mag extension, crappy ghost rings, a tacticool breacher choke, and by all accounts a horrible finish that flakes off. i dont understand why people have such a hardon for them lately - theyre just a clever marketing scheme by Remington to put a few cheap 'tactical bling' items on an even crappier Express than usual and sell it at a premium price.

if you want a complete tactical gun, buy a Mossberg 590 for a few bucks more.
 
Thank you. That was a good and informed post and wasn\'t so hard, was it? The plastic bit makes me a little nervous. I understand that it gets tiring having the same questions constantly asked, but, after all, this is a forum - it is standard fare. I will do a little research on the 590 and also check the finish at on the 870 in-store.

all Expresses have plastic triggergroups - theyre also worth around $300.
my point was that if youre dropping $550 (w/tax) on an Express, youre getting into used Mossberg 590/Remington 870P territory and they would be - IMO - a much better investment. you should apply for EE membership.

dont rule out the Grizzlies either. $300, they are no worse than the Expresses and have metal triggergroups. they take 870 stocks and forends and 90% of accessories.

Oooh, good info. I have looked into the grizzlies, too. I cannot find one in a store to hold, though. Plus Canadaammo is all sold out of the one I may like.
 
Hi HobbesT,

Was this gun for multi-purpose use or just protection. I wouldn't rule out a mossberg. They at least have a blued barrel. Since I'm so short in the arms, the Moss. Bantum 500 with 24 inch barrel and multi-choke system makes a good choice because the stock is already shortened and makes a faster handling gun. These also have replacement barrels from 18-21 inches for varied uses. You could always paint the gun with any color to suit your needs. I've seen some pretty impressive color combinations in the gallery here.

Buy a used 870P before you buy a 870 Tactical. The ONLY real benifit they have over a regular express 870 is the 18" barrel threaded for chokes...But then again, I really really doubt anyone on this site will ever have to shoot off a door knob in their lifetime.

Don't fall for the hype, buy an 870P and never have to worry about it again.
