B&L 3200 question

Can someone tell me what the screw on the magnification ring is for on a 3-9 variable. I have a problem with the knob hitting the bolt when it is on 9x. I was thinking about loosening the screw and seeing if the ring would move without adjusting the magnification, then tightening it back up in case I wanted to adjust the magnification. The numbers would probably be out of whack, but I only use 3x or 9x anyway so that would not matter. I am a little worried about trying it and screwing up a good scope.

I have run into similar problems when mounting short tube optics using low scope rings on a rifle with a high throw bolt . I would not fool with the optics(cost too much to replace),instead, I just went to the next higher size in rings(much cheaper). You could call Bushnell customer service and ask them about the screw.
