I found an old bottle of baby oil. All jokes aside. Has anyone got experience using baby oil on firearms as rust
prevention

I think the guys who refer to 'shotties' or 'winnies' or 'remmies' probably do.

Jokes aside any oil will work to help prevent rust. I think baby oil would be more costly than others.

I use "mineral oil" that I buy from the drug store for a rust preventative. Mineral oil is simply highly refined clear petroleum oil that is fit for human use - both topical and internal. I like to use my fingers when coating metal surfaces, hence the desire to not use oils with additives. Mineral oil comes in two grades, light and heavy. I use heavy, as it leaves a thicker coating and evaporates more slowly. (Yes, oils do evaporate.)

It should work okay for things that get handled and wiped down fairly regularly. As others have said, it is essentially just pure mineral oil. It has none of the modern additives that makers put into specialty products actually developed to do things like lubricate or prevent rust. It will do an adequate job, but pale in comparison to a specialty rust preservative.
