Got back last night from a week hunting up in 16B.

My groups most successful hunt thus far. We downed a vary large cow and a calf.

We got them on separate days. They were not "mom & baby". The cow we got on Sunday morning. Then on Monday morning we switched to another cut when another cow followed by a calf came out just before lunch. Took the calf only as we only had one cow tag.

There was also a very large bull in the area, but we could not get him to come out. So we came back to Toronto with an unused bull tag! :(

Well, hopefully we can get one next year. Now it's time for some nice moose steaks!!

I'll try to upload some pics soon.

Good luck to everyone that is up there right now. I must say that on our drive back down to Toronto from Savant Lake, we saw hundreds of hunters heading north. Usually in little convoys. Looked like a scene from Mad Max or something. As if there was a mass exodus from southern Ontario.

Take care!

Congrat's on a safe and successful hunt!

Those convoys of hunters are cool to watch! Was watching them in Bobcageon.. mostly jeeps!

Man you people really go really far up north to hunt. Do you have camps there or do you use guides or do you just pull over on the side of the road and say this is the spot?

Can't wait for the pics

We go there because that's where the moose and the Adult tags are.;) Get a map, pic a spot and drive, shoot moose.:D

We're leaving on Friday for WMU 13. Hmm, Fri the 13th to area 13...:runaway:

You accually do this? I mean how do you know if somebody owns the land or how do you know anything about it? lol How do you know how the terrain is and or if they are even any animals there?

Good luck with your upcoming hunt

Get Crown Land maps from MNR, most of Northern Ontario is Crown. The terrain is all the same, lakes, marsh, rocks, and lots of jack pines. Pick a road, find a camp site and scout for sign. There's lots of moose there, some WMU's only require 2 hunters in pool one for a guaranteed bull tag.

yup just like blargon said...pick up some maps find a spot that looks nice..phone the local MNR biologist be real nice and they give you some good info..fishing moose numbers logging...etc

thats what we do go where we can get tags

So you call up the local MNR and ask them where the moose are and they openly tell you guys? I will plan a trip for sure next year and I think I will follow this route. I just need to make sure I get a bull tag thanks again

they wont tell you exactly where the moose are just how the population is and whatnot...advice on what maps to get for the area...we like doing this because my group likes to move around and try new areas

Exactly how blargon and Minshall put it. Just get some good topographic maps from the MNR and head north. Up in the Savant Lake area where we were, pretty much everything is Crown Land. I think the only way you could even be on private land is if you were right in front of someones house or at one of the camps.

Another bonus up there is that there are much fewer hunters. Combine this with the vast amounts of Crown land to hunt, and you got a great week of hunting.

 ?!?! Moose with an SKS? not me. People are freaking on some of the other posts regarding hunting dear with an SKS. I wouldn't go there for either.

My moose/dear gun is a Ruger M77 MarkII Sporter in 30-06. :D :)
