Backpacker Question!!

Any cylinder bore shouldn't have much issue with steel shot

It's not just the choke, but the hardness of the metal in the barrel. Even with cylinder bore, metal shot can score the inside of the barrel. Lots of alder shotguns have metal that's actually softer than modern steel shot, and will wear noticeably over time if you do fire steel shot through them.

I reiterate what CanAm already said... why would you? The only time I shoot steel is Duck/Goose hunting because it's the law. But for plinking, lead is much cheaper to shoot. I don't think you're going to have a very good pattern in the sky for shooting ducks using the 12 inch barrel, so... why are you shooting steel?

A guy I hunt with only uses steel for upland hunting. He says why add lead to your meat if you don't have to.

Why would anyone hunt with a 12" shotgun, emergency maybe?? Then some lead shot won't be worried about but these are generally for fun plinking and backpacking animal defence! Slugs and lead shot!

There is logic to this, lead poisoning is a serious underlying problem in todays polluted world! Steel is not recommended for the Backpacker or Outlaw however!

In the manual itself for the JW-87 (83) [Backpacker is JW-83], under page one Section 1:

Source: http://stevespages.com/pdf/century_jw-87-(83)-shotgun.pdf or http://www.centuryarms.com/manuals/...tgun (sg1079-sg1037-sg1080-sg1068)/index.html

So, probably not recommended, but CanAm might know better.

The manual I just received with my 16 ga. JW-83,--- says The shotgun is for hunting birds, medium and small game. The is no caution not to shoot steel. So I believe it is also good for steel shot, the barrel is plenty thick. But this is the newer model from Canada Ammo. Ive shot steel through it and everything is fine.

Clarification of model numbers. The JW-87 is a full length 12 gauge. The JW-83 is a full length 16 gauge. The term backpacker refers to the shortened barrel versions.

I think you got it confused. JW-83 (Backpacker) is 12 GA, while JW-87 is the "a full length" 16 GA.

ZhongZhou's model numbers are confusing but I think these are correct.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the correction. I did not realize that there was a 16 GA JW-83; always thought that the manual was referring to the Gauge-dependency purely on the model, where I thought the JW-83 was the Backpacker in 12GA, only. Now I see there is a JW-83 16 GA non-Backpacker and JW-87 12GA.:runaway:
