Ok I been thinking about setting up an area to shoot some 50 and 100 yard benchrest shooting for myself to practice. Anyways I have been thinking of a backstop and an idea popped into my head. What about a 45 gallon drum on its side filled with sand then embed the barrel into a dirt pile. I could even make a removable cover to keep the sand dry. What do you think? I think it should stop a rimfire round probably even a centerfire.

Any opinions?

Thanks

What's wrong with the dirt pile without barrel?

But if your original intention was to avoid lead contamination,
then I salute you.

Otherwise, what's the point?

That is the point. I would like to contain the lead to avoid contamination. I figured I could shovel out the barrel every year or so and sift out the lead.

i made a backstop out of 1/2" steel plate at a 60 degree angle with make it 1" thick across

its made just like the rimfire bakstops you can buy i put rubber on the back to stop ringing of the steel

i shoot into it alot and have even shot handgun rounds at it no deforming yet

i melt down the lead and use it for slugs and buckshot

I'm not sure I understand.
60 deg from vertical or 60 deg from horizontal?
How did you suspend it in that position?
Pics?
Does your local range allows you to use that?

its on a 60 deg angle that was cut into the side plates then the top plate was welded on

you will see some on youtube that have a angle and then a 90deg back plate thay have a high splash back

mine go's all the way to the bottom plate and has a 2x4 square on the front the bottom plate is filled with sand to catch all the lead

this trap is used in the basement for the most part when i tryed the handgun rpund thay where shot out of a 12ga adapter that fire's 9mm and 1 that fire's .357 on a farm around here
