Backwards Cantilever Mount on 858

First off, I know there are dozens of other (better) ways to mount optics on an 858, but please humour me.

I was wondering how practical it would be to get some type of cantilever mount, installing it "backwards" on the rails of a front handguard such that it points back towards the shooter, projecting well past the ejection port.

I don't have any pics, but do a google of "bi-level rail mount" or "m14 sage mount" to kind of see what I mean.

It doesn't look like the NEA cantilever mount would be long enough to do the job, but does anyone have some insight on a mount that would? The idea would be for magnified optics by the way, since a RDS could just be mounted on the front rails anyway, but a scope has the problem of eye relief.

Thoughts?

Thanks

This has been considered before, with a long rail that goes from the back of the receiver to the rear sight base. A problem with this is that the 858 ejects upwards and the rail gets in the way. I just tried a NEA railed adapter on mine and found that the scope extends too far out over the ejection port and interferes with ejection. The gun is new and has only a few hundred rounds through it, but it has had ejection issues only with the scope hanging out over the port. Plus it beats the hell out of the scope.

I think the NEA rail will work best with a red dot or very short scope. That Bfiles guy has the right idea with a receiver mount that retains the original CZ stock.

Do some reading in the "stickies"section.

Yes the dustcover rail has been the best I have used to date.
Ive had the NEA stock rail adapter and rail, good, but heavy and you can only use AR/M4 style stocks. I wanted to keep the orininal or aftermarket wood stock for it.

Scout rear site mounts are good too, if you dont want to use the irons ever. I like the option of shooting irons and having an optic of somesorts mounted.

DUst cover rail was the best option out there for myself. You can still use the irons if you dont want a R/D on it. It holds zero every time I take it off to clean it and its solid. Down side to it is that it is expensive but well worth it.

Hey Geoff, thanks for the input. I had thought about problems with ejection, but after seeing a lot of the wrap-around mounts that fit on the side of the receiver (and then having longer scopes cover the port) I thought maybe it wouldn't be a problem. Or if it would be a problem, make a shell deflector, don't people do that?

Bfiles, thanks for the input too. You're right, the dust cover mount looks like a great way to go, but it's a bit out of my price range at the moment.

This is kind of one of those "wouldn't it be possible to...." ideas. I think the ARMS #36 14" mount is the kind of thing I'm talking about. But if it would cause ejection issues it's useless.

Thanks again.

ps. I did browse through the sticky on vz.58 optics, but at 25 pages it's a bit lengthy to sift through...
