Bad headspace

What are the signs of excessive headspace in a modern bolt action rifle

It's rare in a factory rifle...

Bolt closes easily on a steel no go gauge or if it closes on a field gauge.

Bolt closes but the extractor does not engage the case head.
Misfires for no apparent reason.
Case head separation on firing.

You don't mention wether your ammo is factory or hand loaded and even more important, you don't mention the type of firearm.

More information would go a long way to answering your question.
