I picked up a box of remington 17 hmr ammo not long ago and took the marlin out yesterday to try and get some groundhogs. After the 3rd shot I thought the report of shot sounded funny and than found I couldn't eject the empty brass.I had to walk home and pry the brass out with a small flathead and found out there was a crack from the top of the neck all the way down past the shoulder.Anybody else on the Site ever have this happen before? Not sure if I should e-mail remington about this or not.

Well I contacted Hornady about bad .17hmr ammo. Got no reply. I have factory loaded split rounds UNFIRED!! Sorry nothing to do with Rem ammo. Wish I could get something in return.

I wonder if Hornady made the rem ammo ??

I'm out of the HMR game now, but I've had 3 of them...and still shoot plenty of rimfire. I don't touch any rimfire ammo branded Remington, and nothing over .22lr made by Winchester.

In your case, I'd contact the rifle and ammunition manufacturers (granted, Remington now owns Marlin) and tell them what happened. There was allot of discussion surrounding proper annealing on HMR cases some time ago, and it would seem that if not done right...splitting was quite common. I've never had a case NOT eject like yours, but have inspected most of the cases after shooting and seemed to find the odd one with a very tiny split. (all Hornady) All that aside~how did you make out with the groundhogs? :)

As an aside..I've been chasing them for a few years with .223 because I figured that anywhere I can make 17HMR-level noise, .223 is totally fine to use too. Since a BUSY day of shooting them is about 8-10 shots, hardly matters (to me) whether they're $.37 HMR rounds...or $1.25 .223 ones.

I did get the first 2 but the 3rd I missed, funny as the 3rd was the closest.I have the 243 which I normally use for the hogs but hadn't had the 17 out in a while so figured I would give it a bit shooting. It says Remington will give $10 for unopened boxes, mine is open and for $10 it isn't even worth my time considering I payed 23 for the box.I am going to contact them though and see what they say.

One of the split Hornady's.

I had the same thing with rem 17 hmr in mine, a ruger 77/17. Well over half with split necks after firing, thought it was the rifle so took er in, nope it's the ammo. Remington said I could send it in for testing on my dime and see what they could do, yadayadayada. The ammo was never recalled, just the firearm from above.

Just toss er out, not worth your time. And boycott rem rimfire stuff and tell all your friends.

I sent them an e-mail yesterday and was told about the same, send in the rest of the box with any split empty cases and they would look into it.I am not spending my money for their mistakes,I would rather toss them out.

Had this happen as well.

I contacted Rem and they told me dispose of all remaining ammo and sent me a check for 50$ as I had two remaining boxes.
