I have a Huglu hammered coach gun for CAS matches. I really like the gun, but the hammers slow me down a bit. I was mulling over an alternative if I wanted it (would keep the Huglu for sure). I was looking at the Huglu hammerless guns but none are available with double triggers (like the double triggers). Had a Stoeger at one time, and my daughter has a Sroger 410 coach right now, and they are not as nice as tue Huglu.

Was looking in the cabinet and remembered I had a Baikal IJ58MA. Barrels are at least 28"; I had refinished the stock and isntalled a new Pachmyer pad on it. While the long barrels are nice it makes it a bit unwieldy in a CAS match and the full chokes are no help either.

Does anyone know what cutting one of these down, putting in a plug, and reinstalling the bead (had an oversized bead installed) would cost?

I would venture a guess of $50 to $100 depending on the smith doing it... I think a decent job on it would take an hour anyway... if you fill the end with black epoxy rather than solder.

Not sure about the Baikal but a buddy of mine had a Huglu and cut the barrels for coyboy'n. What was left of the barrels split apart and a couple of professional silver solder folks tried to stick them together again but , after several failures, last I heard, the gun was given up on.

Not sure why you dont want a single trigger double for cowboy, I've used both and pretty much shaved 10-20 seconds per match with a single...easily adds a second per stage feeling for that second trigger under the clock.

Good to know about the soldering.

I have heard too many horror stories about Stoeger single triggers to trust them. On top of that, the other doubles I have already have double triggers, so it changes the firing procedure slightly. I reach for the front trigger first and ride the finger back onto the back trigger for the second shot which I find as fast (or faster) than resetting the single trigger on a pistol.

Last time I checked Baikal IJ58 had chrome lined interior barrels. That's a much harder material to cut through.
Plus there is no guarantee the remaining chrome lining may start to flake off. I believe you are at the mercy of a chrome lining and its underlying plating to assist adhernce to the gun barrel steal.
That ugliness beyond belief IMHO.
I would lean towards discouraging this idea.
But that's just me.

Not a big deal, 30+ years ago I wanted an open choke skeet gun. I went to my gunsmith and asked him to ream the chokes; he said not a chance as the chrome would ruin his reamers. He advised me to saw 3" off of them, which I did, filed them square, and filled the void between the barrels with silver solder I drilled and tapped for a ray-bar front sight. What a gun!! Go ahead and saw it, I also reduced the stock a bit, got rid of the pistol grip, and reduced the front stock from the beavertail to a narrow, schnabble. Nothing pointed like it!!

Go ahead and cut!

cut it and have fun. worst case scenario you get to do some blasting with it, which sounds like is more action than the gun is seeing now.
