Hello All,

I am looking into purchasing my first shotgun, and have decided to go with a Baikal O/U in 12GA. I have had a good look at what's offered from Trade Ex and just can't decide between a few there.

A few things I have taken into consideration in pondering the selection of 4 shotguns that I have narrowed it down to:

-Extractors vs Ejectors?
-Recoil pad or not?
-Nicer forearm stock design or more plain?

The four I've narrowed it down to range from between $350-$395. All are listed as having "very good bore" and all have full over modified chokes, and double triggers. The rest are relatively less substantive details, but nonetheless are important to me.

The IZH-12 (only 1 of the 4) is the most expensive, does not have a recoil pad, fitted with extractors, has the more plain looking forearm stock piece, but is by far the best in terms of condition.

The IZH-27 #14060 is a little cheaper at $375, does not have a recoil pad, fitted with ejectors, ventilated rib, has the nicer looking stock (with some handling marks)

#14067 priced at $375, does have a recoil pad, fitted with extractors, has a nicer looking stock with a hi-comb cheekpiece (but with some handling marks)

#14068 priced at $350, does not have a recoil pad, fitted with extractors, ventilated rib, has the nicer looking stock (but again with some handling marks)

Which one would you go for?

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Any info on your experiences with shotguns with extractors vs ejectors would be great!

Thanks very much,
Andreas

Hello Andreas - Welcome!

The foremost (IZH 12) on your list would also be my first preference.....the fore end design is also a bit more modern on that model. Proper gun fit, obviously, would be the key selection criteria.

An inevitable question that would generally be prompted via such a thread is - what would the shotgun be used for? Specific answers to that particular question will usually drive the requirement for essential features (i.e. choke type, # of triggers, bbl length, extractors or ejectors etc) that one may be looking for in a firearm of choice.

- Bird hunting? If so, Waterfowl as well?
- Clay shooting too? If so, what kind of game(s) - Trap only or others such as Skeet?

Thanks for your reply!

I plan to use it mostly for grouse and pheasant hunting with occasional skeet shooting at the range for fun/practice. Eventually I plan to learn waterfowl and migratory bird hunting as well (I realize that perhaps a shotgun with ejectors would be quicker to reload, and that a pump action might be more suitable for this type of hunting). I would learn initially on this one with the possibility of getting an 870 pump action in the future. But for now I am partial to these o/u setups.

A double barreled shotgun, either an O/U or SxS, will work very well indeed for Upland hunting. Generally, a combination of more open constrictions such as Mod & Improved Cylinder chokes (for example) will perform more efficiently for bird hunting conditions such as Grouse/Pheasant etc. The double triggers will offer instant choke (bbl) selection.

Moreover, the open chokes such as a combo of IC and/or Skeet will serve skeet shooting needs very well.

One would need to determine compatibility of a shotgun particularly for use with non-tox shells such as steel (for Waterfowl hunting). One should directly avoid any prescription of steel loads coupled with the more tighter chokes, screw-in or fixed type, such as those present on that IZH-12.

Tighter chokes could be easily "opened" up by a gunsmith provided the smith has verified/deemed the firearm to be in appropriate condition for use with steel loads as well.

If u reload go with extractors or learn to catch. With practise both can be loaded quickly. Personally I'd go with the 27 with extractors. All the above will be good guns and tradeex understates their guns
