OP, the stiff opening thing - I had a rifle and a double shotgun - both were similar - go online to Cowboy Action sites - several discussions how to tune them - could be rough bores where the main action springs run and/or where the action bars run - could also be that those springs are too stiff or too long. If you want to play with it, get a replacement set of the action springs - shorten them a coil at a time - opening will get easier and it will open wider - have to remember that same action of opening is also cocking the hammers / strikers, so always need some resistance felt from action bars cocking the strikers - easy enough to go too far - really easy to open, but hammers / strikers maybe do not get cocked. Hence, modify replacement springs, not your originals - if you can not find replacements, don't try to alter the originals, in case you go too far...
