looking at buying a used baikal O/U 12ga. Says built in USSR has etching of a dog on one side and rabbit on the other. Stock and gun i would say is mint condition but looking through the barrel looks to be pitted and/or scratched. Wondering what you guys would say its worth? Are baikal shotguns still made today and if so still in USSR?
Thanks

thy are a strong well built tool that will last a life time and them some ,thy are not a high end shotgun ,so you will not pay a high end price ,250 to 400$ would cover most of these guns .Dutch

Baikal still makes firearms. The older models are branded USSR. The newer models say made in Russia. Most say the older made USSR models are of better quality and fit/finish than the newer Russia branded guns. But you won't have screw in chokes on the older guns which is no biggie. I had 2 of the USSR guns and they are quite sturdy guns. The bores will be chrome lined and likely choked full and modified. You would have to open up the full choke to shoot steel. Chamber length is likely 2 3/4". Value is $200.00 to around $400.00 for a mint example. I'd say $250.00 to $300.00 if it has some minor pitting.

The older guns have fixed chokes, as stated above. As the bores are chromed, you will have difficulty finding someone in Canada that can open them up, if needed. The good news is that the chrome bores are impervious to pitting etc - what you're likely seeing is plastic "streaks". Additionally, the older guns generally have two triggers, which may be limiting. Newer ones are available in two trigger and SST variants.
I've owned both older and newer Baikals. FWIW - I don't see the fit and finish issue that others claim. The newer ones seem to offer a lot more flexibility than the older ones.
