I went out shooting with some friends yesterday and we decided to stop at a Gunsmith's called Pullen's just before the highway out to our shooting grounds. This place was totally awesome, every type of gun you could want ranging from 2 spinning racks of Moisin Nagants to racks of SKSs and Kar98s.
I own a .22 and was thinking about getting something center-fire but didn't want to break the bank so I asked the guys for their opinions. SKS was a popular recommendation, followed by the Moisin. In the end though I settled on a brand new Baikal 12 gauge single shot break action shotty, a case, and 50 rounds for about $250. It's got a 22" barrel but I was amazed by how light it is! At about 2.6lbs it is way lighter than the double barrel break action my buddy has.
Out at our shooting spot I loaded up a round and scared the poop out of my friends who didn't know what to expect (only 3 of my 8 friends who like guns have our PALS and some firearms). Needless to say, we went through those 50 rounds pretty damn quick. I really like the break action because it means you can't just spam ammo, which is what I prefer to use my .22 for, though at $7 for 25 rounds of shotty ammo it's not too bad on the wallet!
Here is it resting on my Cariboo lawn chair. Great gun so far, and a 3 piece takedown!
Also, here is an M14 that a fellow named Tim showed up with and let us shoot. He's a great guy and helped my other friend sight-in his .22. Once again, I am amazed by the firearm community's friendliness and willingness to share experience. One of my other friends got a bit too close to the scope and took it in the face. Nice little cut on his forehead that we laughed about for the rest of the day
Thoughts on the Baikal? I'll try to post some more photos and videos soon!
