Hey guys, I just bought a Baikal single shot rifle in .30-06 chambering. I must admit I am a tried and true Handi Rifle guy but this little Russian rifle is no slouch. It shoots great, is hammerless and has a cross bolt safety. I am leaving it with the original iron sights (OK to 150 yards) and making it my "snowy day" deer moose gun. It is very loud and it generates some recoil, no different than my .45-70 handi rifle. What impressed me was the condition of the brass after firing. There is virtually no change in dimension. I have seen brass from other higher priced rifles look like balloons after firing. In my opinion do not overlook these Russian rifles they tend to grow on you. I will post some actual field reports as the big games seasons begin.

I have heard good things about these rifles, I'm tempted to get one in .308 for my wife, she's left handed and it should function well for her.
 
Wish Baikal would chamber one in .22 Hornet (I do realize there are other brands in that cal). Baikal firearms are nice for the purpose they were built.
 
I had a chance to examine a couple of these and I was very impressed with what you get for the money, in my opinion they are leaps and bounds above any handi rifle out there. They feel solid and look good, especially the hammer forging on the barrel, it is remenicent of the Steyr Mannlicher barrels with their spiral hammerforging on the barre exterior.

THESE BARRELS ARE MADE BY STEYR-MANNLICHER.

A few years ago Baikal and Mannlicher came up with a joint venture to produce a very accurate and high quality bolt action rifle. Mannlicher supplied the barrels and Baikal provided the rest and assembled the guns.

The end product was called the Baikal-Mannlicher BM-1.

Unfortunately, this firearm sold poorly in Russia because of its high price (over $4000) and the project was shelved.

So the Baikal factory ended up with an oversupply of Mannlicher barrels that look twisted from the exterior. They ended up putting them on those inexpensive IZH-18 single shot break action rifles. They will do so until the stocks are exhausted...


Grab one while you can. It's a steal :)
 
I beleive they can be had for under $300

ive handled one in 308 Win, its an ok rifle for the $$ but...gag, Id rather have a Stevens 200 :eek:

Damn it , guys! I put mine in 30-06 on the exchange two nights ago to sell and now with all this talk I don't want to sell it anymore.
 
.308, .30-06 and .223 are the most common in the country right now. I have heard that nex year a bigger line up of available calibres will be in country. I kind of want the 7.62X39 or 7.62X54R for my next one. That 9.3 would sure rock but I don't think I could take much of the recoil pounding.

ellwood epps lists the 7.62 x54R in their invnetory right now
 
I bought one of these in 30-06 last year for my f-in-law to use. I took it to the range to sight it in and once completed, I was amazed at how well it shot. Steyr-Mannlicher barrels you say? I knew there was something I liked about that little rifle!
