recently acquired this gun from another cgnr, and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I'd originally purchased it with the idea that i was going to cut and recrown the barrel to 18.5 inches and cut the stock down to fit my soon to be 6 year old son, with a scope and a bipod. I've discovered that it's a soviet training rifle? I guess i'm not going to bubba it any worse :) The only markings are the serial number (matching on all parts) and "Made in USSR" (unfortunately under a drilled and tapped scope mount). This gun also has a colt butt pad, and i'm not sure if the checkering is supposed to be there or not.

Reg cert says Model: TOZ-8m-01. I've done a little looking around and it seems they were made as TOZ-8, TOZ-8m and TOZ 8-01, but not 8m-01 (uness they're an elusive rarity :) ). Anyone else have one to compare?

Anyway, it's a good little shooter as far as I can tell. i can keep them in the black at 40 yards with CCI CB shorts, and it probably will do better than that (see below). Going to mount a 3-9x40 scop on it and see what it can do with wide variety of cheapish and middle of the road ammo.

the one problem that I'm having is that the rear sight spring is missing. I'm looking at it thinking it looks a lot like a nagant sight, but don't have one to compare, and is quite similar to the sks sight. think i can make a nagant or sks spring fit :) i'd like to find a proper one somewhere...anyone know where to get parts for these?

I had troube getting pics, my cave is a little dim, but the original hooded front sight is there. Wood is about 98% except for it has a strip of that bedding paper stuff in the barrel channel, and metal and bluing is aboout the same.

Looks like an interesting rifle. I own a couple of Baikals, one I've had since the 70's has been an accurate reliable shooter, the other I haven't shot yet. Sorry, I can't help you on this one.

Well, from comparing pictures, the front and rear sights look to be the same as a 91/30. Now I just need to find a 91/30 rear sight spring for less than a firstborn child and a kidney to try it out :)

Or, since it has a dovetail for a scope and you plan to buy one anyway, cut and crown the barrel (or not), remove the rear sight base and just use the scope.

The rear sight it a similar design to a MN but its nowhere near interchangable. The spring you need is a pretty simple flat leaf. You could probably make one out of a piece of pallet strapping (the blue steel bands used to secure loads on pallets). You just need to shape it to fit and bend it up a bit at the front to put some pressure on the bottom of the sight.

The checkering is original factory. i would try lever arms for an sks rear sight spring. It might fit with a little fine time with a dremel.

It doesn't have a dovetail for a scope, it was bubba drilled and tapped with some cheap bases screwed on. Also, i notice the only thing different than a 91/30 rear sight seems to be the little notch like cutout on the front of the base. And it's not that different :) look:

toz 8m rear sight.

The ront ight is th same as a 91/30 as well, s far as i can tell from a picture. I'll have to measure the sights tomorrow (jut got home from work, tired!!!) and ask on the milsurp forum if someone will measue their 91/30 I guess :)

I'll try the pallet strapping idea. I know 100% that this sight is a lot longer than an sks sight, and the spring fits in differently. On the sks, the pin is very small, and there re little nubs on the leaf that the pin goes through (at lest on mine). I've read that they started production in 1934, so it would make sense to me that they might use the same sights as their current rifle on their training rifle. The only difference i can see is the graduations on mine are graduated in 25 metre increments from 25 to 250.
