Hi Folks,

What methods have you found to work best for baiting Magpies...I've got a few around and a new Gamo hi-velocity .22 cal pellet rifle I want to try out on em'. :)

Thanks for any tips - Jeff.

Just go stand in the woods, they come up and sit on your head :D Well almost :)

Why would you want to kill a magpie?

They are an opportunistic predator (aka garbage bird), one spring, when I was walking from work, I spotted a magpie raiding a robin's nest and eating the eggs. I personally have no problem with them, but in certain parts of the province they make pigeons look good.

Gopher trap set on a fence post with dry dog food on the pan.

Hell, just put the dry dog food out and then take them when they land to take the food, then change the food's and your position. This will keep them from figuring you out for a few extra shots, but not forever, the little bastards are pretty smart.

They like to try and sneak into my parent's gazebo and steal food from one of thier dogs all the time..

What the frig' is a magpie?? is that like a crow???

I once had a girl working in the office who was from Ontario. We made a run to a supplier one day and there were some magpies working over a bag of garbage.

She looked for a minute and said "What are those penguins doing here?"

Seriously, try dog food. Puppy chow should bring 'em in for some killing.

And when you kill one, I want you to scream "That's for Silverado you dirty squaking vulture!!!"

God I can't stand the hellacious squaking those birds make.

i agree with m12 suggestions' i also use breadcrumbs and anything that stands out, i even made magpie decoys out of black garbage bags, some scotch tape and white paper to mock their white plummage..it worked until i nailed 4 of them, then they started to wise up, but they quickly forget after a couple of days. they sure make for challenging targets ..

I read a book by this U.S. Gov't. hunter(mainly extolling the virtues of the 220 Swift as a deer rifle). In one of his jobs he was also responsible for dispatching animals struck by vehicles. He followed the blood trail of a car -struck -doe for about a half mile before he caught up to her, shooting her in the head as she struggled weakly to lift herself up . Walking up to her he noticed a lot of movement under her hide , in the stomach region(where there was a large car-caused gash). To his horror a heavily-laden Magpie emerged from the guts of the deer and attempted to fly away, but was quickly dispatched by the hunter.
The Magpie had been feeding for quite some time on/in the still living doe .
I have no compunctions against killing these vermin .

put dog food in a shiny pan....shoot one magpie...if another one comes and starts making a heck of a racket it is the female mate....let her squawk...all the other males for miles around will come and "court" her...if you are using something quiet like 22LR you should be able to kill as many as you want (my best is almost 30....
the noisy mate is something i learned from "ripleys believe it or not" when i was a kid...

If in or near an urban area, MacDonald's cheese burgers, complete with yellow wrapper nearby, its a Magpie Magnet.. who said MacDonald's food wasn't good for anything????

Happy Hunting... get as many as you can....
