For a project I'm looking at either building my own ballistic log book or purchasing one. Obviously there are pros and cons to both.

Just for the option can anyone recommend and goo pre-made log books? Here's a few I've found that I'm mulling over purchasing.

I'm having a tricky time picking between the two bolded options, any suggestions?

I'll still probably try a DIY one too but getting quality paper along with dicking around with the printer and format and sizing might kill the allure of it.

Mine's a hand written notepad. Bit of a mess. But I have ballistic information on 7 different loads of .308 .....BC, drop charts, MV, yada-yada-yada.

Works for me. Can be time consuming. But it's free...stole the notepad from my wife.

I have the Storm Tactical modular. Pretty good, lots of different target types and the zippered cover is nice. I also have the pocket version but I really don't use it.

Look through the links, they all seem very similar, probably comes down to price and availability.

There are a bunch of PDFs out there, some even from Storm I believe, for everything you need in a log book. Last year I made a couple of books both for load development and shooting log book. I take the pages I need out of the binder at home fold them in half and put them in one of those smaller aluminum clipboards that closes up. It is covered and has a nice flat hard surface to write on. Also the pages are formatted to be folded in half so it all works as per design.

If its complicated or cumbersome you are less likely to use it. If its camo cover or tactical earth colour you will lose it!

I went pure and simple: 12$ from forestry suppliers. Rite in the rain or equivalent books. First couple pages have tons of trig tables in them and distance conversion which is sometimes nice. the waterproof pages are an added bonus same with a handy size. I like the flexibility of being able to use my book for both loads and range work, so I went with plan lined sheets and grids. This is what I got:

I've done mine in excel, along with a size range chart, and a few other variables, then laminated the pages.

I do have a hard on for water proof paper though...

I've always done my own but since there are now good pre-made ones, I'll probably go that route next time.
I'd go Impact due to personal choice.

Impactdatabooks makes good stuff, I have their FDAC for the 175 smk.

Edit: never mind, they just sell it it's made by Adaptive consulting.

Thanks for the feed back guys.

Question for you.

Part of the reason I'm leaning towards the Storm Tactical modular book is because it's had some really good reviews and also I have a nice 6 ring binger and case already so the inserts will fit into it perfectly. The thing is I'm using an MRAD scope. Does it look like that book will be in all MOA? If that's the case I may switch to the (metric) Impact Data book and just try and jimmy it into my modular binder.

I would be surprised if it was MOA. Mil is pretty well standard for most of their clientele. After cruising the pre-made pages they have they are all blank type forms, it will be up to you to fill in your calls and holds in either Mils or MOA. I'd suggest reading this to see what you are getting: http://www.stormtactical.com/stu/How_to_use_the_Sniper_Data_Book.pdf

Try just a blank note book for a while to see what you actually need and use, you may be surprised.

It will have a Mil value adjustment page AND/OR a MOA value adjustment page or should. If it fits your existing binder go with Storm.

Metric is better for .1 MRAD turrets, 10 base for 10 based turrets.

I use the Storm one, it came with cd that has a number of the pages as pdf's. I have rite in the rain blank pages that I run through the photocopier. Works okay but is not rain proof.

I like their format, it makes you run through a set routine of noting the data, and is easy to review after the event. I'd be lost without it.

Candocad.

I'm also using the Storm 3-hole heavy book. I really like the setup but I wish it came with some type of divider. If you're going to be logging data on multiple rifles/calibers find yourself some 5.5"x8" dividers, you'll appreciate it down the road! I bought dividers on Amazon but have since seen them in a few stationary stores.

You can design the pages you want, either stealing or from scratch, take them to Staples and have them printed on waterproof paper. They charge by the number of sheets bought and printed, don't have to buy paper by the package.

I personally went with some data pages that I downloaded for free and some that were sent to me by friends and bought a sleeve of the waterproof paper from Staples to print my own. I find this way I can tailor my book to my shooting and get more out of it.
