Hello all

I was just wondering if there is anyone out there that is using the Winchester Ballistic Silver Tip. I am and i had an outstanding first hunt with them. I am using the 30.06 in 168 grain. One shot broadside right at the base of the neck at 74 yards. I love them and i am probably going to use them for moose hunting next year too.

Ballistic Tips, including Ballistic Silvertips, tend to be relatively light jacketed and fast expanding bullets, particularly in .30 caliber and smaller sizes. They are not noted for their deep penetrating capabilities.I would suggest a heavier constructed bullet noted for deeper penetration over the Ballistic Tips for moose hunting. Hitting one heavy shoulder bone could mean the difference between moose meat and a wounded and lost moose.

Ballistic Tips are normally quite accurate, and can be a good choice for deer hunting, but larger game is not their strong suit, where deep penetration and a bullet that holds together well are more desirable.

nosler partitions ..... simply love em for moose
but the winnie ballistic silvertips have been performing well from the 308 on deer and black bear. My tricked out m14s groups exceptionally with them too and they don't suffer the typical primer dents from chambering with a semi auto that most other commercial .308 does.

Actually the .308" 180gr ballistic tip has a very thick jacket.I killed eight elk and two moose using them in my 300ultramag at 3340fps muzzle velocity.I have driven them through both shoulders of a bull elk and they still retained 60% of the unfired weight. The jackets on the .308" 165gr ballistic tip are much thinner.

Same as the .338 and other larger Ballistic Tips (most of these have been replaced by Accubonds now though), thicker jackets for heavier game.

Since he is talking 168 Ballistic Silvertips, they are not going to be heavily jacketed and well suited to heavy game though.
