Was thinking of using a 308 for a longer range varmint gun (coyotes) and was contemplating ammo selection. I was thinking along the lines of one of the Winchester or Hornady ballistic tipped rounds (150g IIRC) but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions ? Pelt and meat damage is not an issue - I just want a bullet capable of a reliable kill. Also, if it matters, I live in Southern AB where it is almost always windy (100km/hr isn't strange down here). I likely will not be shooting LR during that type of weather but again, there is almost always some wind to dupe....

I suggest you go to an Accubond they will deliver enough energy to kill a Coyote without tearing huge holes... I use them in a .270 for coyotes... they buck the wind great and they are as good as a B/T at long range!
Will accubonds go through and through at closer ranges ? I was thinking ballistic tip to lessen the T&T possibility (even though pelt damage isnt an issue right now, it might be some day

Accubonds will go through and through at most any range on a coyote... I have taken them at 350 and the 140's shoot through... two stitches in and three or four stitches out. Ballistic tips are hunting wieght bullets in.308 but it will leave much bigger holes on exit and they will still shoot through at most ranges.
I am not sure how much damage will be cause at those velocities? It may not be as bad as you think with the ballistic Tips. I have shot some deer with this set up but 165s and was not a big mess at all. I did recover a bullet at 60% of its original wt.
only shot one wolf with the 308, with a 165 gr. Nosler BT. I dont recall exit hole being overly large, but it sure did leak a ####load of blood over the 40 yards it covered on its death run.
I have shot a couple yotes with the 260 Rem w/ 87 & 100 gr., and exits were both softball size. I almost tore a yote in half once with a shot too far back with a 160 gr. Nosler out of a 7mm Rem Mag.
I dont think you will find the 308 Win fur friendly, but if just killing yotes is your goal, then any bullet you use will probably work very very good!

The best bullet I shot at coyotes with a .308 so far are the 155 gr.A-Max.Shot two coyotes this morning with the 155 gr. at approx.250 and 220yds. through the shoulders with about 1" exit.The lighter bullets (110,125 and130grainers) tear up too much of the hide.-Rainer

Try a few different bullets and see what your rifle likes.
150gr or thereabouts should suffice and give you the plusses in terms of the wind as well as the higher velocity. A good compromise weight in the 30 cal, IMHO.

try the amax in 155g, it seems to blow up real good inside the yote if you hit the boiler room much like a 22 or 6mm Vmax fwiw
don't use the 150g SST as they punch through and keep going often with a really long BEEEEEYOOOOOOW sound as the bullet disappears over the horizon....

It is going to be worse than you think. I have used the 110gr VMax and the 125gr BT on yotes and bot blow big exit holes out the other side. The only difference is the VMax's exit hole is about twice the size. 110gr VMax's will produce about a 3" + diameter exit hole and leave the insides pretty mushy.
