I recently installed a Balvar 2.5-8X external adjusting scope to my pre-64 mod 70 .243 using the Bausch and Lomb Star Wheel mount with windage and elevation adjustments. The mounts are in new condition. I`ve never these mounts before and am not sure I installed them correctly because if I push very hard forward on scope the mount slips out of base. Also, there is some side to side movement on mounts when I push. It`s not really loose and I have the star wheel screwed as tight as possible. I don`t think that in the field this condition would affect accuracy unless the scope got a real hard bump. But ... does anybody know if this kind of movement is normal for these mounts. Have I done anything wrong installing them. Also, any tips on adjusting mounts when sighting in would be appreciated.

You can find these mounts on Ebay but before purchasing be sure what type of mount, condition and reliablilty of seller. Mounts are usually available for U.S. 1940- 60's vintage rifles such as Remingtons, Mod 70's, Mod 54's, Springfields. If you purchase, I recommend you purchase bases and rings together from same seller in same transaction to be sure they match each other because not all do and try to get in new condition. Two types of mounts seem to have been made: plunger and star wheel. I think the star wheel type is better because it is more stable on rifle. I think the spring in plunger mounts may be weak on some used ones but as you can see from my previous email I'm no expert on this. Bausch and Lomb made them as well as another manufacturer I think Kuharsky.
I've got a set of Leupold adjustable bases for a pre-64 M70 (Fit on the later ones as well), rings, box, Allen wrench and instructions, and a 2.5-8 Balvar. High tech stuff, back in the day.
