BAR .338 With BOSS

Had the BOSS system on a 223WSSM- got rid of it right away. I found it terrible because each time you changed ammo you had to recalibrate......and I could never get it sighted in... maybe I'm just a terrible shot!

Personally I would never have a BOSS type device or muzzle brake on a hunting rifle. They're loud to the point where you could permanently damage your hearing, or your hunting partner's hearing, with a single shot if you're not wearing hearing protection.

So the Boss works but the extra noise factor make it not worth it?
Any one have a .338WM and do they like it....with BOSS or no BOSS system.

The 338 win mag in a browning Bar Safari is quite tolerable. The semi really soaks up the recoil. The boss does reduce recoil a fair bit more, but as previously posted they are LOUD!!!

I had a 338 Win Mag in a Bar Safari and sold it to a friend. My father has a 300 win mag in a Bar Safari as well. We both shoot Browning Shorttrac Stalkers in 300WSM now. They are quite a bit lighter and we prefer the synthetic stocks with the grip panels.

A hunting buddy has the 300WSM in a Browning Safari and it is a great gun but noticeably heavier than the Shorttracs, plus the Shorttrac's hold 3 rounds in the mag where the Safari only takes 2 rounds.

Both the Safari's and Shorttracs have been accurate and reliable.

i've got a bar first generation in 338 win mag with a kdf brake on it, and i never considered it as noisy at all- and i use the 250 grain factory, and 275 grain handloads- as far as the boss goes, it's a GIMMICK as far as i can see- you"re suypposed to "tune " the barrel to the ammo; handloading does the same thing , but in another way; you tune the ammo to the rifle, and it does no good if the boss isn't in place and fixed when you do your load development; the hearing damage thing is a MYTH - i've had mine since 91 , and i still hear quite well- better than most folks- as long as there's sufficent distance between you and the muzzle, or your friend and the muzzle, it's NOT a factor-

yes it's louder but i think the boss is more or less a marketing scheme of little actual value. my friend has one and for the extra 400 he paid for it i'd say he got ripped the #### off. stick with the normal barrel it's not worth the extra money.

Have you ever shot a Browning with a boss on it? I am not talking about other brakes a actual Browing Boss. If you don't think they are a lot louder than a regular barrel your hearing is far worse than you assume!!!

I did some load development for a friends 338 win mag in a browning abolt stainless stalker and I found it uncomfortable to shoot with just regular muffs on. I ended up using plugs and muffs on the days I was shooting it!!

My browning 22-250 with boss is accurate, but you definitely need to hunt with earplugs in or i guarantee you will destroy your hearing.I fired it once without protection and it was atleast thirty to forty seconds before i could hear anything again. I can't imagine how loud a magnum would be with the boss!!! The boss system also comes with the boss cr which should give the accuracy without the muzzle brake noise.I havn't tried my boss cr yet so i can't comment on the noise.

the reason i got the kdf was b/c i was envisioning shooting heavy loads at high velocities- right at the end of the spectrum of the 338 win mag; but, 400 was a rip-off- mine was like 60 bucks installed , but i didn't have the barrel trimmed , just turned and screwed on the end- that's the only reason for adding a muzzle brake - 'heavy loads"

i had a 300wsm with BOSS and i hunted with EAR PLUGS ...i tuned my boss [sweet spot] and it was very accurate ..it will nail [300 wsm] anything that walks or crawles in north america if you do your part ..i see no need for a 338 win . mag ..but hey what do i know .
