Barnard S Vs P Pierce for F/TR?

Going to be gathering parts for an F/TR build and was wondering about the pros and con between the two? I know the P is about 300 more but that is with the trigger. My other option is a Pierce which is about 300 cheaper than S . What do you all think?

Caution on Barnard depending on the stock. It is not a true Remington Footprint. The quality is great but just make real sure it will fit the stock.

One more action you should consider is Defiance - you can get from Alberta Tactical - they are closer to Barnard quality than Pierce. Defiance has true Rem 700 footprint and a model with itegral recoil lug. So thats real nice.
 
Or... Alberta tactical's in house machined Infidel. Available in almost any configuration you may be looking for. Looks to have borrowed many of the best aspects from several of the other manufacturers.
 
Defiance and PGWDTI Coyote are excellent - own/owned both - but I think they are, perhaps, best suited to a tactical rifle. For F/Class my #1 choice remains Barnard P but you may also look at RPA which are less expensive but feature on a lot of winning rifles especially in Europe.
 
Pierce makes some awesome products, I've used all but the competition action so can't comment on it other then fit and finish being very nice. The Barnard I have used, hard to be disappointed, top shelf for sure. One of the smoothest actions I've ever owned.

I agree, RPA action has more wins under its belt than any other.
 
Thanks I looked at the RPA but it doesnt seem to be available in a 223. If I was to go with a Barnard S what trigger would you suggest?
 
I went with a 1.5-3oz jewel on the Barnard S I have, pretty sure others fit it too, CG makes really nice triggers.

Regarding P vs S I picked the S because of its bolt release(setscrew on P), and the S is a bit closer to a 700 profile but quite a bit stronger. P is even beefier, doubt that makes any difference for a .223.
I like the barnard bolt assembly, no special tool required to take it apart.
Haven't had the chance to see the Pierce actions yet.
 
i have owned two pierce single shot actions on my ftr builds and love them both,will by another one if need be.also owned a defiance single shot it is not a direct remington 700 drop in the pierce is.
 
2011 British FO top 10, Bat X 2, Barnard 7. RPA are still popular with TR, but many gunsmiths won't build FClass rifles with them. .
 
Probably because they are 4 lug actions causing the rifle to move around too much when operating the the bolt. Not so much a problem with TR.
 
Mmm, I don't seem to have that problem with my RPA ( Reiben/McPhee supplied/built) moving about but I can see what you mean and I suppose it could be an issue. I suspect though that gunsmiths are simply more familiar with other actions and so prefer to work with them.
 
At least one Canadian gunsmith recently returned an RPA as it couldn't be squared. A top EUR gunsmith says tolerances are too poor. You may wish to speak with Marius de Champlain on this. BAT are the favouite of BR and usually are claimed to have the tightest toleances, but are more subject to gauling. Pierce and Barnard are chrome moly, which I think is a better choice. A less expensive BR type action is the Borden Rimrock BR, but it is not a 700 footprint and is SS. They also do 700 foortprints.
